* Add [lsrc]
* Add “strict”.
The nuance is often closer to “strict”, as in “strict
*requirements*” (要求, 条件) – “severe requirements” is not
really idiomatic English.
(Heard from a woman bemoaning that the men she met were
choosy and demanding (シビア), and I was confused because
“severe” suggests mean or sadistic.)

Interesting. Here the bakeries, which are mostly "hot bread" chains, sell all sorts of cakes, pastries, etc. We don't call them pastry shops, though.
8. A* 2022-12-10 14:35:10  Marcus Richert

I think what I was thinking of is that bakeries in Japan sell a lot of things you wouldn't expect to find in what gets called a "bakery" in Europe or the US. Compare
bakery site:co.uk
with
パン屋
on google images. It's all a bit muddled of course with no clear delineation but I don't think having "pastry shop" as the last definition subtracted anything from the entry.
