Comments: | I don't think the sense in the daijs ref is covered so far, and I believe it's the same sense as in the form "今に通じる". E.g.: "今に通じる大師の教え" "中学生の頃の感想は今に通じるか?" I don't see anything in my JEs that covers this, and I'm not sure what a good gloss would be (particularly that would also cover the first example from daijs). |

Comments: | Aside from how 反宗教主義 is against/anti(反)+religion(宗教)+doctrine(主義), there is also the fact that the Japanese descriptions of what the word means, as well as usage of the word, clearly indicates that it is opposition against religion. This is completely different and separate from secularism, which is absolutely NOT opposed to religion! Secularism is merely the idea, that government and laws not be based on religion, and be religion-neutral. Not give special privileges, nor condemnation, based on religion. Secularism, being fundamental to religious freedom, could indeed be argued to be PRO-religion! Firmly anti-theocracy, sure, but any theocracy is anti all religions, other than the state religion. (secularism can also be seen as neutralising, or "taming", religion, making it not be so harmful or influential …but that's beside the point!) |
