Comments: | As a matter of policy I like to cover as many forms as is reasonable, as a lot of apps/systems/etc. are doing searches based on the glosses. I should have applied the "can it be the subject of a sentence" test to 'good value'. Of course, you can actually say "Good value is one criterion I apply when choosing a restaurant." That test was often invoked by Bart Matthais on the SLJ group - if you can't say "XXが..." it isn't a noun. I note that many terms in 大辞林 which are marked as "名" fail that test. |

Comments: | Sorry to make such a fuss over a hyphen. :-) I didn't think think that having a hyphen was necessarily wrong. I just felt that it was preferable to have the two-word spelling if only one spelling was to be included. It seems that Webster often gives only one of the correct spellings for adjectives that are spelled two ways. e.g. Webster has only "up-to-date", whereas the Chicago Manual of Style says: . * Adjectival phrases: Hyphenated before a noun; usually open after a noun - an up-to-date solution - his equipment was up to date . ... whereas Wiktionary does include two spellings, as you have done for this entry (お得): up-to-date up to date (after the noun) |

Refs: | "gure derives from gureru, a type of reverse slang with roots in the pre-modern era, created by flipping the order of syllables in the word hamaguri (clam) to guri-hama. The verb gureru was then extracted, to mean when the top and bottom halves of the shells of a mollusk are not matched and therefore don’t close uniformly, i.e., a misfit. By extension, gureru means to stray from the right path, things not turning out as hoped or failed expectations." http://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2012/12/09/national/new-breed-of-criminal-elements-emerging-from-the- shadows/#.Ufbhp9KBmfY . Refs: | It came up in this example: それ以外にももちろん、お家を購入する理由は数あれど、... [While there are, of course, many other reasons to buy a home ...] . Here's what one webpage says: Qu. メレンゲ菓子は数あれど、これほど繊細なものは珍しい。 あれど = あるけど makes sense to me in the context. Is 数 here read しばしば, and is this a set phrase? . Ans: It's a literary construction (and indeed the origin of けど); basically you take the conditional stem (仮定形) of a verb (or other conjugable) and instead of attaching 〜ば you attach a 〜ど. . 数 is pronounced かず here. The collocation 数ある means ‘many’. The first half of your sentence may be translated as follows: ‘Although there are many meringues, ...’ http://japanese.stackexchange.com/questions/2711/regarding- %E3%81%AF%E6%95%B0%E3%81%82%E3%82%8C%E3%81%A9-or-possibly-just-%E3%81%82%E3%82%8C%E3%81%A9 . Do you want to add "数ある=numerous; many" as an additional entry (or instead of 数あれど)? ALC examples: 数ある~のうちの一つにすぎない be only one of many ~の数ある逆説の一つを紹介する introduce one of the many paradoxes of |

Refs: | I suggest adding "loosely-organized criminal gang", based on a reading of http://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2012/12/09/national/new-breed-of-criminal-elements-emerging- from-the-shadows/#.UfcNzdKBmfY e.g. "Unlike boryokudan (gangsters), the han-gure can be characterized by their loose horizontal ties between members." . Note also that they aren't entirely separate from yakuza: "The “half” in the term is also a nod to the fact these new groups are half-yakuza, as many are backed by yakuza or ex-yakuza who can no longer operate in the open" |
