Comments: | There is another use of this word I've run across a few times that doesn't really mean "morass", but I'm not quite sure how to phrase it, particularly as a noun. For example, at the reference link, one example sentence is 少年は顔中泥んこになって帰って来た -- "the boy returned with his face covered with mud"... you wouldn't say "his face had become a morass of mud". Or in the sentence I just found in the book I'm reading: 両手は泥んこなのが自分でも良く分かっていた -- he knew that both his hands were covered in mud. Again, "morass of mud" doesn't really fit. So I'm not sure whether it would be best to add a noun meaning here like "muddy thing", or if it should be a na adjectival like "muddy". Each time I've run across this word in the past and looked it up here, I've had the same dilemma about what to add, but in the past I just gave up. This time, though, I thought I'd leave a comment and let you decide what might be best :-) |

Refs: | I don't think the first part ("medicine and one's daily diet are equally important for a healthy body")is correct. The Wiki article says that 医食同源 means 日頃からバランスの取れた美味しい食事をとることで病気を予防し、治療しようとする考え方。 http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/医食同源 There's nothing about medicine being important there. On the contrary, 医食同源 is used to describe Sagen Ishizuka's approach to healing. He was renowned for healing by "prescribing a simple change of diet" rather than medicine. The Wiki article on Ishizuka says 栄養学がまだ学問として確立されていない時代に食物と心身の関係を理論にし、医食同源としての食養を提唱する。 . The third part of the existing definition says "medicine and food have the same origin". That may be a literal interpretation of the characters, but it's not what the expression actually means. It seems to be saying that "food and medicine are both derived from plant and animal sources", which is not really the point. . Kojien's definition of 医食同源 makes the point that food and medicine are essentially the same thing -- not that they have the same origin. Kojien: 病気を治すのも食事をするのも、生命を養い健康を保つためで、その本質は同じだということ。 . The Japanese expression 医食同源 was derived from the Chinese saying 藥食同源: 「医食同源」という言葉自体は中国の薬食同源思想から着想を得て、近年、日本で造語された。[Wiki article quoted above.] Here is an extract from a magazine article which explains the meaning of the Chinese saying 藥食同源: 是傳統中國醫學的特色,主張由自然食物進行身體的修補工作 "This is the special viewpoint of traditional Chinese medical theory. It places an emphasis upon using natural foodstuffs to undertake the work of fortifying the body." |

Refs: | The 「尻を捲る」 headword appears in many refs (daijr/s, meikyo, shinmeikai, obunsha). Do we really want to hide it? I was unsure about the しり reading for 穴, but I see daijr/s has it listed as a (俗) reading in their entries for けつ【穴/尻】. This reading isn't in jmdict, though. |
