Comments: | To me うさん臭そう looks like a regular formation from 胡散臭い. As an adverb うさん臭そうに applies to the verb; not an object, so it has to be the person who is looking that is acting suspiciously. Possibly the only odd thing is that you don't use うさん臭くに. I don't know about an entry for うさん臭そう - I'll see what others think. |

Comments: | Or, maybe the entry should just be for 胡散臭そう, "suspicious". I just ran across it as 胡散臭そうな目付きをした, which is a な adjectival, but again, the adjective describes "looking with suspicion", rather than "suspicious looking". |
|
1. | A* 2013-06-02 19:00:34 winnie <...address hidden...>
Comments: | As in the example sentence for this entry, there's another nuance of this word, as in 胡散臭そうに見る -- "to look at someone suspiciously". In this case, the adjectival meaning of "suspicious looking" or "shady" isn't correct. But I'm not sure whether to add an adverbial meaning here, or if there should be a new entry for 胡散臭そうに, since that seems to be a common adverbial form. |

Comments: | Your disparaging remarks are noted. But, at least, one inadequacy has been corrected by the submission. As for the inclusion of "入国管理", I refer to my earlier comment and Jim's response which was: “you stated, "Why don't they just use "入国管理"? Not for me to say, but they don't.” As the novice in the matter, I am just left to wonder. As for the cross-reference, for the novice, it is always useful to know the relationship between similar expressions. |

Comments: | I've added entries for 入国管理 and 出入国管理事務所. The situation here is not particularly confusing, and I don't see that any xref from 入国管理局 is necessary or helpful. |
|
3. | A* 2013-06-02 20:01:15 Francis

Comments: | Because of your earlier remarks and because "局 【きょく】 (n,n-suf) (1) bureau; department" is a mere suffix which can be attached to many similar situations, e.g., post office, etc., I anticipated that "出入国管理 【しゅつにゅうこくかんり】 (n) immigration control" may be the appropriate entry to which "局" would be attached. When I saw the entry for "入国管理局", that seemed to me to be the "oddity" following your remarks about "出入国管理" being the normal usage for immigration control. And, therefore, if the main entry above were still to be an entry it could be cross-referenced to "出入国管理" to show a more normal reading. Maybe, an entry should be created for "出入国管理局" which would make a better cross-reference target, but because my submission was prompted by your comments, as referred to, and because of the standard suffix I just made the submission in the form which I did. "入国管理局" does get about 1m Google hits so maybe that highlights a real oddity in so far that when in Japan they refer to “immigration control” they use "出入国管理", but when they refer to the “immigration [control?] office” they refer only to "入国管理局". I hope that helps to explain why I made the submission in the form which I did. My apologies if my logic does not match reality. My KenKyusha actually gives “出入国管理事務所”for an immigration office, which gets more than 1m Google hits. |

Refs: | Encyclopedia of Japan offers the more accurate but much less common in English "emigration and immigration control". It apparently does cover both immigration and emigration: ===== Immigration into and emigration from Japan are both regulated by the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Law (Shutsunyūkoku Kanri oyobi Nammin Nintei Hō) [...] All Japanese nationals may emigrate from Japan to any other country except North Korea. Japanese nationals with a known police record have difficulty obtaining a passport. |
|
Comments: | Hard to decide what to do with the glosses on this one. Certainly, "emigration control" is not at all common in English, and none of my J-Es offer it as a gloss for 出入国管理, though it does appear in some of Eijiro's examples. |

Comments: | There are two levels here: (a) yes, if you dig into the kanji, that term does mean control of both immigration and emigration; (b) in Japanese usage, which what dictionaries are really about, it means just "immigration control" (probably because there is no control on emigration. Why don't they just use "入国管理"? Not for me to say, but they don't. All the dictionaries, including the government's own "Standard Legal Terms Dictionary" say it's "immigration control", so who are we to argue? Coming the other direction, the リーダーズ+プラス EJ glosses "immigration control" as "(出)入国管理", among other things like 入国審査. |

Comments: | I think the 目の届く... is a different idiomatic expression. We already have an entry for 目の届く限り, and it might be good to have one for 目の届く所 too. |

Comments: | This seems to also be often used as 目の届く, as in 目の届く所 or 目の届く限り, but I didn't think it was worth a bunch of individual entries for each variation. |
