Conjugations

History:

I approved the dropping "to be idle" because it lacked the context of the term.

  Comments:
「何サボってんの?」 can mean "why are you slacking off" i.e. "get back to work"
most importantly, it can be said by a teacher to an idle student (e.g. student chatting with friend) with no insinuation that the student is cutting class at the moment

"to be idle" was not a bad translation

* Change gloss to indicate nuance – the 国語辞書 all say ちょ
っと、なんとなく、どことなく – this is a milder form of 粋
* add alt sense “conceited”, with note on usage
* link to underlying words
* put 小粋 kanji first – it’s the only one given in GG5
(though 研究社中 gives only 小意気), and is appropriate for
the more common “stylish” usage.
It’s clear what the appropriate kanji per usage are (小粋
for 粋 and 小意気 for 生意気), but dicts don’t mention this,
and appear mixed in usage. Cross-references should make it
clear to users w/o needing a separate note.

I agree we should have all the observed/used/etc. single-kanji country abbreviations. I was
thinking we may need a new pos for them, but maybe just [n][abbr] will do.

  Comments:
Isn't "造語成分" just how Shinmeikai labels its kanwa entries, which means we can (mostly) ignore them?
I think we're making an exception for country names because they're useful to have.
What's confusing is how the kokugos classify them; there's no consistency. According to daijr, 加 (Canada) and 葡 (Portugal) are nouns but 米, 豪 and 印 aren't. Some don't even have a kanwa entry (e.g. 希 - Greece).
I'm not sure any of them can really be considered nouns, but if we're going to include 英, 米, 仏, etc. in the main dictionary, we should probably include all the kanji country abbreviations that aren't totally obscure.

as 造語成分, 土[と]=つち. but not as a noun, which is what we currently have sense 2 as.

造語成分 are generally a mess. if と is split out, should we include the earth sense there? if not, what justification do we have for including some but not all of its 造語成分 meanings?

rather than make entries for 造語成分, we should consider merging in kanjidic. that's basically how the kokugos handle it.

i'll submit a separate と entry for now

表す is a bad case, as it appears in three entries.
I am happy to have a set of hints for novices around somewhere, but I'm not the right person to write them.

  Comments:
That is a very helpful comment.
As step further, I am wondering if it would be possible to include a highlighted note on the “http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/~jwb/cgi-bin/wwwjdic.cgi?1C” page, which note could be included after the heading "Hint" and could include another heading called "Notes for the Novice searcher". This “note” could be linked to a simple set of basic guides which may help the novice in a really constructive way. I know that if one reads the User Guide in detail, many things are seen to be simple. However, that is a bit like asking the child to read the full introduction to a standard dictionary in book form. Such a link for the Novice could be also included in the User guide and it would help the novice to overcome many simple steps in order to get greater value from this valuable dictionary; without having to read a mass of helpful information from day one of usage.
3. A 2013-04-07 17:48:06  Rene Malenfant <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
We generally don't link between words with the same surface form but completely different etymologies.

The novice always has the option of using the "Common Words" option when searching. In this particular case, while that box is checked when searching for 表す, 表す[ひょうす] goes away while 表す[あらわす] remains.
2. A* 2013-04-07 11:17:34  Francis
  Refs:
See below.
  Comments:
This entry shows a link to "表する 【ひょうする】 (vs-s,vt) to express; to show; (P)".

When the novice sees "表す" in text and searches for that the novice sees the above entry as the first result. The novice sees the link as shown above. If, of course, the novice looked carefully at the next result which had the headword of "現す(P)", the novice would discover another result for "表す".

What I am suggesting is this: that in the headword for this submission, that a link is also provided for the following:-

現す(P); 表す(P); 現わす(P); 表わす(P); 顕す 【あらわす】 (v5s,vt) (1) (esp. 現す, 現わす) to reveal; to show; to display; (2) (esp. 表す, 表わす) (See 言い表す) to express; (3) (esp. 表す, 表わす) to represent; to signify; to stand for; (4) (esp. 顕す) to make widely known; (P)

The novice would then readily find the that the reading being sought is more likely to be "あらわす" than "ひょうす" or "ひょうする".
