Comments: | I think I'll close it at this stage. We've had a ゼネラルコントラクター entry since 2005, and it gets ~200 in the n-grams. I see many of those are describing the source of ゼネコン as general contractor accompanied by the katakanan transcription, but a few are freestanding. That said, I can't really make a case for ゼネコン coming from ゼネラルコントラクター. I'll put a link from ゼネコン to here. |
|

Refs: | https://www.oreyume.com/column/otherwise/4204/ "ゼネコンとは、もともとは英単語の「General Contractor(ゼネラル・コントラクター)」が語源となった言葉です。" |
|
Comments: | The fact that no dictionary has an entry for ゼネラルコントラクター (or even mentions it) suggests that it was never an established term before ゼネコン came into existence. See how the above site explains the origin of the term. I don't think it's generally considered an abbreviation in Japanese. |
|
12. | A* 2020-04-11 05:00:57 Marcus Richert <...address hidden...> | |
Comments: | My bad. I think it'd be easier to just do the xref. I just don't find it very believable that "general contractor" made the jump from English into Japanese immediately as ゼネコン, and even 百歩譲って assuming it's true, it's such a minor, minor point and I don't see how it'd do any harm to call this an abbr and x-ref to ゼネラルコントラクター. |

Refs: | Daijr, GG5, 新和英中辞典, etc. |

Comments: | The refs are all over the place with sense splits. GG5 and 中辞典 combine ground/crust/etc. with foundation/base, but Daijirin and Kodansha split. Daijr has "bed" in with the earthy one, which makes sense. GG5 splits footing/foothold and support/constituency, but 中辞典 combines them. I think the above works OK without getting too messy. GG5 has ちばん as a reading; Daijr just mentions it. |

Comments: | I don't think "stronghold" is quite the right word. It's defined as 1. A place that has been fortified so as to protect it against attack 2. A place where a particular cause or belief is strongly defended or upheld I think it's more like "constituency; support (electoral, etc.)" It corresponds to Kodansha's 勢力の範囲. Anyway, I don't think that sense should come at the head of the definition. Example: 当地では近年共和党の地盤沈下が続いている The Republicans have been losing support here recently. |

Refs: | Thanks for making that last change, Jim. Regarding the remaining definition: . I think "hot spring area" can suggest an area *outside* of town, as in "Jigokudani Monkey Park is a famous hot spring area near Nagano, Japan" -- that area would not be considered a 温泉街 because it's not a 町並み (as in Wikipedia's definition -- 温泉の宿泊施設や温浴施設などが立ち並ぶ町並み). . And adding "e.g. within a town" also suggests that it could be outside the town (thanks to the "e.g."). . I suggest that we could say it's a "district", by analogy with the term "red light district", and that we should remove the "e.g." since it's necessarily part of a town, and not out in the countryside. |

Comments: | "a part of town where hot spring inns or facilities are clustered" -- I think that's a nice definition there from GG5, and I think my "resort" is a bit off the mark, since it suggests that it's the whole of the town rather than just a part. . How about "a part of town with a concentration of hot spring facilities and related businesses" or something along those lines? |
