Comments: | There is a good reason for having a form like サッサと available to text-glossing systems. It is very useful, if not vital, to be able to handle katakana forms a bit separately. I'm comfortable with サッサと ending up as a search-only/hidden form, because glossing software can still use it, but it's important that it be available. |
|
13. | A 2022-07-19 04:00:03 Marcus Richert <...address hidden...>
Comments: | Yes, esp. when it comes to hiragana vs katakana I think "90k in the ngrams" by itself is a meaningless statistic. Jisho, yomichan, wwwjdic can all find this entry fine without "サッサと" being explicitly included. |
|
12. | A 2022-07-19 00:06:43 Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
Comments: | I don't think it matters so much when it's simply hiragana vs. katakana. Most clients handle the conversion themselves. I have no objection to keeping it for now but I agree with Marcus that it should be a hidden form. アリガトウ gets a massive 230475 n-grams but we (rightly) don't include it as a reading. Once hidden forms are implemented, I see no reason not to use percentage-based thresholds (allowing for exceptions here and there). |

Comments: | That's probably it. 鼯 is a JIS0212/0213 character. Most Japanese online sites are stuck in the Shift_JIS Dark Ages, and that encoding has trouble with non-JIS0208 characters. The KOD site substitutes graphics for 鼯, etc. |

Comments: | I've reorganised the first two senses in an attempt to make them more distinct. Added a "to think (that); to judge; to believe" sense. We didn't have a single gloss for this meaning. Reordered the other senses and revised the glosses. I don't think "to suspect; to doubt" is a separate sense. It only means "doubt" when preceded by "ではないか". I've added "suspect" to the new sense 3. |

Comments: | "I think we often add x-refs when the kokugos define words as "〇〇に同じ" or similar." I would say that no, we don't, and haven't really since the days of Nils Roland Barth, but I could have missed some new development the past year or two. I don't think it's meaningful to add these until the arrival of jmdict NG when we supposedly get a revised xref system (though I don't remember if "synonym" was among the suggestions, nor am I sure it should have been) |

5. | A* 2013-02-07 08:09:08 Marcus Richert <...address hidden...>
Comments: | There's no mention of "supplemental information" in the guidelines though? (except for when there is no common name) I agree it _can_ be helpful but personally, I just think of it as clutter. Descriptions could be added to pretty much every species including everything but maybe cats and dogs and it would be somewhat helpful, but also a mess. Armed with the latin and/or common name, it's not hard to find out what kind of fauna you're dealing with, even if it isn't immediately apparent. |

Comments: | that said, before removing them all, i'd read this: http://www.edrdg.org/wiki/index.php/Editorial_policy#Names_of_biological_species = i'd tend to leave supplemental info when it clarifies what the creature IS (i.e., some people may not know what a 'grouper' is, so saying that it is related to a sea bass may be quite helpful.) on the other hand, the species distributions, etc. seem encyclopedic and superfluous to me |

Comments: | Should we switch to leading with the daijs pronunciation (not sure...) Not sure if the contents of the refs changed since 2013, but "ref 2" was daijs, and daijs today gives only one reading, which is じつてんぽ. My inclination was to swap the readings. But looking around online, at least in speech there seems to be a preference for じってんぽ. This word is not in sankoku, so no help there. I wonder if any official references you have give the じってんぽ reading, since daijs now (mysteriously, since it seems common enough) seems to omit it. Is this considered a [col] reading maybe? |

Comments: | I wrote a similar entry for CC-CEDICT a couple of years ago ~ 實體店 实体店 [shi2 ti3 dian4] /brick and mortar business/physical (rather than online) retail store/ . Note that "brick and mortar" seems to be the usual US English term, whereas in Australia etc., it's plural "bricks" -- "bricks and mortar" (CC-CEDICT sticks to US English) . Note that Ref (2) above gives the hiragana as both じってんぽ and じつ‐ てんぽ, but I would think じってんぽ is more likely to be correct. |
