Comments: | Yes, I know that cicada and locust are not the same, and that 蝉 is a cicada, but many Americans call cicadas "locusts", so JE dictionaries tend to have both. The 中辞典 has "《米》 a locust" in its 蝉 entry. |

|
Comments: | The gloss "locust" is wrong for this kanji and reading, although many people seem to believe that cicadas are a kind of locust, if we go by the many "debunking" articles about this issue on the web... By the way, locust is 蝗 コウ or いなご or ばった (same character also in Chinese) |

Comments: | i was going to write a similar comment. we already have both components of the term, so i think it's unnecessary (and unsightly). i know there's some collocational value to 'parent or guardian' in english, but if this is to be added for e-j purposes, then i think a more literal translation would be better (e.g., eijiro's 親もしくは保護者). but that's clearly got no idiomatic value in japanese |
|
4. | A* 2014-02-25 04:55:30 Jim Breen <...address hidden...> | |
Comments: | Is this really needed? If a term has meanings of A and B, isn't it implicit that it can mean "A or B". For example if KKK means "house; apartment", doesn't it mean that "owners of KKK" means "owners of houses and/or apartments"? I can't see a need to spell this out. |

As in the example sentence (文法なんかくそくらえだ。 Grammar be hanged.). The reference links have a few examples translated as "dang silly", "nuts to that", and "stuff it". Comments: | Saw this today in 雲白肉片 (ウンパイローピェン) (will add later); from hits v. common. This is not a common/popular dish in the Anglosphere, so no default translation; gave a descriptive translation and a poetic translation (as is common in Chinese dishes). Transliteration not used (no “yunbai pork”, and “yunbai rou” is 2 Japanese hits) – this isn’t like mu shu pork. Also brief [expl] – it’s boiled pork slices, with some variation in saucing, but basically spicy and garlicky. Omitting “slice” from gloss, as that’s more appropriate for 雲白肉片. It looks it’s from Chinese 云白肉 yún bái ròu (as 云 is simplified 雲). I can’t read Chinese, but from the Chinese page it looks like 蒜泥白肉 (suàn ní bái ròu) and 白片肉 and 云白肉 are synonyms; 蒜 is “garlic”. BTW, 白肉 (bái ròu) “boiled pork” is a very common in Chinese, used in various compounds. |

Comments: | Saw as 雲白肉片 (ウンパイローピェン) today, with explanation (it’s not very familiar, but not rare). The shorter 雲白肉 is more common. I’ve distinguished the glosses slightly with “sliced”, as that’s the emphasis here. Ostensibly this should be from Chinese 云白肉片 (yún bái ròu piàn), but that gets virtually no hits, so it looks like a Japanese formation on Chinese roots. I don’t think we mark these specifically (it looks like modern 和製漢語), so it’s clearer to refer to the form that is used in Chinese. |

Also, I'm pretty sure this is an adverb -- I found it used with な and に -- seemingly in an adverbial context, but please adjust if I'm wrong. |
