Refs: | daijs wiki etc. describe 庚申塚 as a "塚" but all pictures (including the one in daijs) clearly show it's a standing stone, with no discernible mound underneath. i daijs says about 塚 2nd sense: また、一般に墓。 墓 itself is defined like this: 遺骸や遺骨を葬る所。また,そこにしるしとして立てた石・木など。塚。墳墓。 |

Comments: | I realize that the example sentences with the JMDICT entries are separately managed by the Tatoeba Project, and I don't know how they get associated with entries here, but I wanted to say that I think the sentence associated with this entry is unnecessarily homophobic, and I would encourage you to remove it. Two male students sharing an umbrella... is that really "strange"? Only if you have a very closed-minded view of appropriate male behavior. |

In the early days I got in trouble with this expression once - and then I learned not to use it as casually as we do in English." Comments: | At first I thought せうゆ might have been 旧仮名遣い for 醤油 but I see that's シヤウ in all the kokugos. せうゆ in fact is not in any kokugos, but the Q/A quoted seems to indicate that it is an old reading - it's an interesting discussion. We don't usually include 旧仮名遣い but I think せうゆ can probably stay as "old kana". |

English has a similar colloquial/familiar use of a husband referring to his wife as "mother" (if the couple has children). Also as described at the first reference link: "in oral expression, a humble term for referring to one's own wife". Please modify the phrasing of the meaning if you'd like. |

Shibano's JIS 漢字辞典 simply says it's an old variant of 唖. "oK" really means out-of-date kanji, and this is certainly one. It's not in any of the other kokugo entries for 唖々/唖唖 AFAICT. |

Comments: | When I've run across this term, it has typically been in the context of things actually physically knocking against each other. Perhaps that is captured by the first meaning, but taken as a whole, the current meanings present a more metaphorical sense of knocking together. I've not changed the definition, in case you feel "to knock (ideas) against each other" already covers it, but please go ahead and add a more physical meaning if you think it appropriate. The reference link has only the current JMDICT definition, but a couple of the example sentences there show the term used in this more physical sense. |

Comments: | Properly it’s from Piedmontese (pms), but that’s in ISO 639-3, not -2. BTW, I believe this is often served *cold* in Japan, though in Italy it *must* be served hot (literally “hot dip” – “dip/wet/bath hot”); I’ve an Italian classmate who complains about this. |

Comments: | I came across it used "ですますで話す" or something like that on some random page online (I don't think it was the exact one I posted as a ref) which is why I added it, but I agree that the search results aren't all that convincing. |

4. | A* 2013-02-27 00:05:22 Jim Breen <...address hidden...> | |
Comments: | I recall my Japanese teachers using "ますです' quite a bit, but it may be something that gets used in JSL instruction, but not in real written Japanese. Even "ますです体" only gets 113 hits, and many are from here. I suspect this one is not real enough for inclusion, especially as anyone looking for it will find ますです体. |

Comments: | i get a huge number of false positives for this, e.g. mostly stuff like 「...と思っています。 ですが...」or people using both ます and です to end a sentence: 「今月も任務完了してますです」. also, the example provided definitely doesn't convince me that it's a noun. |
