Comments: | It doesn't refer to the principle/policy itself. In all the examples in the refs, it comes straight after a noun. I don't think 一本やり itself is adjectival. I don't think the third sense is needed. It's only in daijs and it's not how you'd say "one/single spear" in modern Japanese. The other kokugos have "槍一突きで勝負をきめること" but it's archaic. |

|
18. | A* 2022-08-30 12:21:14 Marcus Richert <...address hidden...>
Refs: | MW "a Japanese wooden clog for outdoor wear" RH "a traditional Japanese wooden clog that is worn outdoors, with a thong that passes between the first two toes and with two transverse supports on the bottom of the sole." collins: "a type of Japanese wooden sandal" enwiki: "Geta (下駄) (pl. geta)[1] are traditional Japanese footwear resembling flip-flops. A kind of sandal, geta have a flat wooden base elevated with up to three (though commonly two) "teeth", held on the foot with a fabric thong, which keeps the foot raised above the ground." |
|
Comments: | It's interesting to see how different dictionaries define it. I guess I'm OK with sandal,, but maybe we could provide more details, like the 英英 dictionaries do? |
|
17. | A* 2022-08-30 02:50:21 Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
Refs: | https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clog |
|
Comments: | I see that the definition of "clog" is something like "footwear usually with wooden soles" (WN), so geta fits with that. The JEs tend to have both, e.g. GG5 has "a Japanese wooden 「clog [sandal]". To me, a clog typically has a closed body, at least at the front, so I'm more comfortable with the current gloss. We could add "or clog". |
|
16. | A* 2022-08-30 01:48:51 Marcus Richert
Comments: | Is "wooden sandals" really better than "clogs"? When I think of geta, I immediately "hear" the sound they make, which is very similar to that of clogs. I'm not sure at all what a wooden sandal would sound like when used. I don't know if this is a weird way of thinking of it, but I do think geta are much closer to clogs than sandals also in structure |

Comments: | the "to point out" sense is "sense 2: daijr: [4] 指さし教える。 daijs: 2 指などでさして教える。「地図を出して―・す」" so if it's to be kept, maybe it should instead be clarified as "to point out (with one's finger); to point to" |

Comments: | The rationale behind the sense splitting is not apparent to me from the English glosses, though it perhaps might be with some further elaboration. However, I suggest basically splitting into "show" vs. "indicate" as in New Century WaEi: [1][v5s,vt] to show;to display;to demonstrate;to express (an emotion, opinion, etc.);to give (an example) [2][v5s,vt] to point out;to indicate; to read (e.g. clock) |

Comments: | There's another meaning to 体験 not covered in most dictionaries, in things like "手作り体験", "そば打ち体験", where it means "to try out something". Sure, it's an experience, but I feel there's probably a better way of translating this, though the words elude me right now... it's a tryout in the sense that it's "Trying something to find out about it.", but not as in "A test of the suitability of a performer" (from Google's own dictionary). It's really a demonstration (that you get to take part in)...? |

Comments: | You're correct. I note that the JE dictionaries favour transitive glosses (in the active voice), probably because the passive voice can sound awkward and is less helpful for translations. e.g. "このびんには2リットル入る" is better translated as "This bottle holds two litres" than as "Two litres can be held in this bottle". But I support the change. I've amended the "obtain" sense as well. Added some more senses. I don't think we need a separate sense for "break into". I'll reindex the sentences if this is approved. |

Comments: | From what I understand, sense 4 seems "backwards" - the most common definitions of "contain", "hold", and "accommodate" are transitive, but "入る" is listed as intransitive. The examples I have seen other dictionaries use to explain this sense all seem to point to a passive definition, where the subject is the item being "contained". I suspect sense 7 has the same issue, but I couldn't find examples online in English and my Japanese is poor. Wiktionary: 旅費には朝晩の食事代も入っています。 The travel expenses also include the meal plan for both morning and evening. Ex: Maggie Sensei この料理には何が入っていますか? What is in this food? 料金にはサービス料が入っていません。 The service charge is not included in the fee. |

Comments: | That restriction means that only 訊く is used for sense 3, which isn't correct. The only way to indicate that 訊く only applies to sense 3 is to add restrictions to all the other senses. A cleaner solution (and what I propose) is to split 訊く out into its own entry which points here. Most of the refs don't include it as a headword, only as a "「訊く」とも書く" note. --- I've added a couple of senses. |

Comments: | i think the current gloss is not very helpful '*a* kanji' is a bit deceptive imho, as this often refers to compounds with "obvious" on readings i'm not sure about "nonstandard" either, ja wiki treats "百姓読み" and "慣用読み" as synonyms and i think they have a point while not all "百姓読み" aren't necessarily "慣用読み" they often overlap, some kokugos use 垂涎/すいえん as an example of "百姓読み" which other kokugos treat as "慣用読み" kokugos use other examples for their "百姓読み" definitions, but i don't think they're very recognizable |
