Comments: | I am revisiting an edit proposed by Rene back in May 2007. See http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/~jwb/dicsubs/PreviousYears/2007-05/subs2007-05-30.html I took the decision at the time not to add 襲 to the 重ね entry. I now think that was a wrong decision. Rene wanted an additional sense restricted to 襲. I see from the Google ngrams that 重ねの色目 is almost as frequent as 襲の色目, so I'm suggesting making it a note instead of a restriction. |

Comments: | When used as 付き物だ(or です, or である), the word has a sense not captured here--that of "X usually accompanies Y" or "with X you usually get Y" (e.g., 歩道には並木が付き物だが、ここでは並木の代わりに、古新聞の束があった。-- There are usually trees lining a sidewalk, but here there were piles of old newspapers instead.) But I'm not sure whether this is something to add to this word (since this more an exp than a noun), or if it should be a new entry for 付き物だ・です・である. |

Comments: | That's what I would have thought, and that may be "correct usage," but in practice it seems that there might be an overall tendency to use 痛み even for the "damage" sense. For example, I get the following figures: Google n-gram counts 毛先の痛み 1198 毛先の傷み 1008 (about 20% higher usage for 痛, even though it's the "damage" sense) With Google Verbatim, the 毛先の痛み figure is 34% higher than it is for 毛先の傷み. But I don't disagree with the suggested change. |

|
Comments: | The 日本化学会 proposed in 2015 to use「貴ガス」in textbooks, in line with the 2005 recommendation of the IUPAC (International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry) to henceforth use "noble gas" in English. In light of the recommendation, is the [oK] tag on 「貴ガス」 still valid, or should it be used instead for the other 2 forms 「希ガス」、「稀ガス」 ? |

Comments: | No, the author whose book I was translating was using kocchia/tonburi as a way to describe the arabic food couscous. That led to a google search which gave me the information I posted earlier. Of course, the author may not have entirely known what she was saying. The book is "Golden Time 6", published in 2013 or so. |
