Is there support for this being used at the beginning of something, rather than the end? The Wiki ref and daijr both say it's a type of 手締め, which they both say are used at the conclusion or completion of something.

Since we have an entry for へりくだる (I just added "uk" to it), I doubt へりくだった is really needed. へりくだる itself is more common.

According to 大辞林 and anecdotal evidence, へりくだった just means "in a humble manner". In the worst meaning it can refer to someone being overly humble to suck up to someone else, but I think "condescending" is misleading.
