The above addition was in the text which I was reading. It only picks up some 10k on Google search. Much less than the 750k of the main entry above. It is included in some dictionaries like Weblio. well, the japanese word is definitely a noun, and phrases starting with gerunds are the way that we usually gloss nouns if they are given as 〜こと in a dictionary, however, all my sources give it as the bedding itself (not the action of leaving it laid out), so i think the sense you've added is in fact the only correct one
