Heard in line today – a man suggested to his companion that they 手分けする, meaning he’d stand in line (e.g., for beer), and she’d go stand in another line (for food etc.). …so sense of “splitting up” seems pretty marked. Comments: | My grandmother served in WW2, and every time I write about this I wander off to find this gloss again. I think I've used 軍隊 in the past as well, but this term seems a bit more common by n-grams. I think this is more about English than Japanese. Whenever we talk about military affiliation, I think the word "service" is used simply as a sign of respect, and will often be the better gloss. "serving (in)" isn't likely to make this any easier to find in the E->J direction (we have 63 glosses for "to serve", and 40 for "serving", and 151 for "service"), so maybe that's a lost cause, but you can only do what you can do. |

Comments: | 1) yeah, but in cases where there is no idiomatic translation..? I'm not sure "disguised contracting" is that different from the "go-home club" definition for 帰宅部. 2) not sure, I struggled with it quite a while. I based my definition of daijs: "実際には派遣労働であるのに、請負契約を装うことで 企業が雇用責任を免れようとすること。[...]" [...]" |
