Comments: | In the text which I was reading it uses "キャンヴァス" for canvas. I checked around and it seems to get the odd 30k Google hits [not many compared to the main entry above]. Weblio includes it, so maybe you would consider adding it to the above options. You also have the following on site:- キャンヴァス (n) canvas; canvass; JWN-02953673-n キャンヴァス (n) Canvas; WI1 I did not want to try making a separate entry because it seems better for the searcher to have the options in one place; should you choose to add it. |

Comments: | I think that is a good solution for dealing with my point. As a novice I have often found things in Japanese to be the reverse of what I had expected. Even when I have heard Japanese speak in English, they often say things in the reverse order to what I may say things. When dealing with plant life, as a basis for ranking, I thought a plum may be more important than a pine [for humans, plums are good to eat, but maybe the pine is good for making furniture, etc.] and the reverse order of Japanese things was an influence on my thinking; until I happened to look up "pine" for something else. Anyway, many thanks for that and I hope that your suggestion is supported. |

Comments: | It may seem obvious to a Japanese person or someone familiar with Japanese' thinking, but I wonder if you could indicate which is high, middle and low ranking, e.g., high ranking (梅), middle ranking (竹), low ranking (松). I have probably got it wrong, but although it is clearly a normal usage and I can find the concept of "high, middle, low" against the entry above elsewhere, I have not seen any which indicates which is which. Perhaps you can eliminate that doubt. |

Comments: | I can see what's happening. I create merged entries for the glossing file after a simple sort, and since のうりき sorts before のうりょく, they are combined in that order. I have just modified the merge utility so that if the merging entry contains the tag "(P)", it will go first, *unless* it is a one of the pseudo-entries tagged "<<verb stem>>". It seems to work OK. This fiddle, which will go live tomorrow, affects about 350 entries. I'm leaving this open as I need to amend the Tatoeba index for 能力, and that site is currently down. |

And maybe the sample sentence should be removed from the following entry :-) 能力 【のうりき】 (n) {Buddh} (See 寺男) low-ranking priest who does manual labour at a temple; male temple employee 彼はすぐれた能力をもっていた。 His talent was of a high order. |

|
Comments: | Not trying to be pedantic, 入り切る is a weird Japanese pairing (entering and cutting?), so I don't have any way of guessing whether this means "fitting inside a container" or "fitting in with a group", which is the usually meaning of "to fit in". Seems to be the former. In that case, the usual gloss would not be "to fit in" in any case, it would just be "to fit". "It fit's". "It doesn't fit". Seems to be used predominantly in the negative (it doesn't fit), but maybe that's the same in English and isn't actually remarkable. |

Comments: | In a childrens' text book written for Japanese children it carries the sentence as follows:- 竹ひごで、もけいひこうきをつくりました。 Basically, someone made a model plane with bamboo sticks. Searching around, there are a good number of general Google hits with many referring to "bamboo lottery", but the Google images provide a better picture of the wider use. For example: games, modelling, etc.. Finding support was more difficult for the novice, maybe a little like the "kimono"!! However, I guess that all Japanese children would know, at least, if they had read the above text book. |
