Comments: | Hi Jim, here's a quick justification for the edit on this entry and the other entry for "potentiometer" that WWWJEDIC has (this is directly in one of my fields of expertise, but even Wikipedia will tell you the story in detail): there are two completely different electric/electronic devices called "potentiometer", whereby among practitioners the more widely understood (default) meaning of "potentiometer" is "variable resistor" or "adjustable resistor", i.e., the same meaning as the (nowadays) relatively rarely used term "rheostat". The other "potentiometer" is a measuring device - "meter" as in thermometer, etc. - for electric potential (voltage) (See my related mod entry.) |

Comments: | I'm just trying to make sense 2 coherent In my understanding, there are always three people involved: A, B, and C A is trying to contact (or visit) C through whatever means, but instead only gets hold of B. It falls on B to convey this information to C. Therefore, B acts as an intermediary between A and C. With this set of glosses, there should be a clear link between senses 1 & 2, where previously there was none that I could see. |

2. | A* 2013-01-24 22:56:01 Jim Breen <...address hidden...> | |
Comments: | You wouldn't find 圕 in those references because their online editions have restricted kanji sets. The Japanese Wikipedia entry for 図書館 used to begin: "図書館(としょかん、古くに圕とも)とは、...". at some stage the "古くに圕とも" was deleted (I haven't hunted through the edits to find out when or why). 圕 is a JIS212 kanji that was kept on in JIS213. In the JIS dictionary, there is the comment "圕は図書館の合字". We have plenty of entries with odd and obscure kanji included, appropriately flagged, and I think having 圕 as an "oK" was really quite appropriate. It should be in the entry somewhere. |

Comments: | Displaying both is not really an option - it would be a major change as it's geared now to display just the first choice according to various criteria. For 締め切/etc. I'd prefer to have the regular entry picked instead of the masu-stem, but the code sequencing does the verb-detections before the regular entries, and it would be a super pain to change it. If I ever get to rewrite that module, I'll try and handle this better. |

Refs: | Encyclopedia of Japan: suigun 水軍 General term for naval forces in Japan from ancient times to the 1850s. According to the chronicle Nihon shoki (720), Abe no Hirafu led naval expeditions between 658 and 660 to subdue the Ezo tribes of northern Japan. His navy was defeated, however, in 663 at the Battle of Hakusukinoe in Korea. In the Heian period (794-1185) sea forces were maintained by local families along the Inland Sea and northern Kyūshū. They participated in the Taira-Minamoto War (1180-85) and played an important role in the Battle of Dannoura. Naval forces were also mobilized against the Mongol invasions of Japan in the late 13th century. Because of the policy of National Seclusion, daimyō during the Edo period (1600-1868) were prohibited from building large ships. When the Tokugawa shogunate began to modernize its military forces after the mid-1850s, the term kaigun (navy) was used. |
