On reflection, I agree it's probably better to clean up the indexing of the examples for 置く・おく.
12. A* 2022-11-08 00:31:47  Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
I still don't think it's needed. As an auxiliary verb, おく can be used with all sorts of verbs. する is just one example.
If we have this, we'd need to add the other auxiliary verb senses as well. Daijs has 2, GG5 has 3, Daijr has 5.

I take the point about the に. I think it's worth mentioning, though. Maybe this works.

With 800+ in the n-grams, I think it's best to keep it with the "ik".
I like having good coverage of gairaigo versions, especially as they enable text-glossing software to work smoothly. If シャンデリヤ were dropped, there'd
be a partial match on シャンデリア, then a trailing ヤ and things would get messy.

Certainly not within the dictionary. It would be stretching things to have conjugations listed separately. In a morphologically heavy language like Japanese, where most of the verbs are very regular, I can't see any need for it.
I could potentially do it in WWWJDIC, but I have chosen not to. The exception is in the Text Glossing, where it is done by invoking rules. If you put in "乗っ取れる", it says:
Possible inflected verb or adjective: (potential or imperative)
乗っ取る 乗っ取る(P); 乗っとる 【のっとる】 (v5r,vt) to capture ...
I think that's about as far as one can go.

in definition 6, the "to #*ck" part should be deleted; it is vulgar to use in English. You could say intercourse if wanted, but "to have sex" is clear enough.

As “digging for potatoes”, a misspelling of 芋掘り (手 not 土) (digging vs. ditch).

The sense “potato field (furrows)” (currently incorrectly at 芋掘り) seems to apply here, hence switching them.

The entry is much cleaner and easier to read without it. If the inclusion of an archaic form introduces a lot of restr tags, I think it should be split out into a separate arch entry or dropped entirely (my preferred option).

A dictionary can only go so far, esp. with an irregular verb like 来る.
Perhaps a 来い entry could be devised.
5. A* 2012-09-06 11:53:27  Francis
  Comments:
Many thanks for that.
The problem which I had was this: When I searched for each bit of the total expression I could only find what seemed like one suitable entry for "こい", namely: "こい; っこい", but that did not quite fit for the reasons previously stated.

Now I know that the "こい" relates to "来い", I can search for that and I get the following link:-

 来い (etc.) See: 来る

However, I cannot then go to (V) and find the "こい". I can of course now find that on another site.

I think that(when I searched for "こい" as part of the "a + b" approach to the parts of the total expression) if "来い" had come up as well as "濃い" and "故意" and "鯉" and "恋" and "こい; っこい" and "古意" and "請い", I may have been able to reach the answer on a simple process of elimination, but as it was I was left with uncertainty until you provided the answer.

= "聞かせて来い"
3. A* 2012-09-02 18:08:14  Francis
  Comments:
I have not changed the above because I may be up the wrong road, but with so many Google hits for the actual expression (聞かせてこい) which I was looking for it seemed to me that I should find an entry on the site for the complete expression as well as some help from the above entry.

I am taking it that "こい" above is based upon "恋".

As stated, the expression in the text which I was reading was "聞かせてこい". This I was taking, in context, as "he would love to cause the (the sound of birds)to be heard (by making a disturbance)"

As the above entry seems to be only applicable as a suffix to an adjective or after a noun, it seems that it would not be applicable to my search.

My point is this: that if the above entry is also applicable to a verb, my search would be a + b and possibly you may not wish to have a submission for the "聞かせてこい".

These comments cover お別れ会, お別れの会, and 偲ぶ会.

Not to be overly personal (ok, overly personal) but my dog passed away unexpectedly this morning. I asked a doctor what to do by phone, and he asked me if I wanted an おわいかい or not (I misheard him). Figured it out though, so I've be digging around these terms.

Note: the related term 告別式 is similarly split into two senses.
(告別式 seems to usually appear with a more solumn, black, saying-farewell-to-the-deceased "funeral"-like sense )

Long story short:
お別れの会 = お別れ会, senses [1] and [2]
お別れ会[2] = 忍び会 (only one sense, nearly identical synonyms)
With maybe *one* exception: 偲ぶ会 doesn't seem especially applicable to pets (at least not commonly)
somewhat less frequent, セレモニー in place of 会
"deceased" is a tiny touchup since I am here. britannica confirms my intuition that this fits better with funerals.
google searches suggest the "funeral" usage [2] dominates [1] (especially with the の variant). Maybe they should be ordered in reverse.

=== End short version ===

I strongly think that a distinction between [1] and [2] adds clarity, even if [2] is essentially a euphemistic application of [1]. I think it makes the glosses and xrefs cleaner, and is unambiguous that this is a usable expression in both contexts. We've already kind-of agreed on the existence of [2], which I just pulled from お別れの会.

I'd never heard the term "memorial meeting". Seems fine, but far less common than "memorial service", and a bit less common than the friendlier "memorial gathering". All of these describe the same activity.

"gathering to remember a dead person" should be expanded to "pet" (ペットの別れ会). "a dead person" is necessary in some form, somewhere, because we have a huge number of "memorial service" entries (war memorials, natural disasters, etc.). Only a handful are individual funeral/death specific and it would be good to distinguish them. I said "person, pet, etc..." but I don't know if anything actually comes after pet. Perhaps it's just "person or pet".

home-going service/homegoing service are interesting glosses, and probably applicable in some cases, but they seem rather explicitly Christian

4. A* 2012-09-06 10:45:38  Francis
  Comments:
Thanks for the comment. That's me upgraded on the point. However, anyone else who searches for the tripple kanji combination (一分後) would not necessarily know what is common knowledge amongst those who do know.

In the same context you have an inclusion for:-

一分半 【いっぷんはん】 (n) a minute and a half

Now, in my way of thinking, "半" could potentially have a reading [as far as the novice is concerned] of "ハン" or "なか.ば". However, a search on your site for that tripple combination removes any doubt.

What, I wonder, is the difference between the inclusion of the above and the inclusion of "一分後".

Of course, I would be very disappointed if my additinal argument resulted in the removal of "一分半".

In that last context, I do understand that if the novice had any ideas that "なか.ば" could be the suffix reading, then the novice would be told that such a reading is bound to be wrong unless the kanji form for the expression was "一分半ば". Which, therefore, means that the suffix can only possibly be "ハン". This result can then only mean that this entry should be deleted because it is obviously a + b. Whereas the main submission above should be included because potentially it could be a suffix of "ご" or "あと" or, indeed, even other reading options; all of which are given on the site when one looks up "後" on its own because there is no separate entry for "一分後".

  Comments:
一分 いっぷん for "one minute" is already an entry, this seams
superfluous to me.

The reading is "いっぷんご". I would have thought both that and the meaning would be clear.

The headword was in the text which I was reading. The only problem is the reading. Is it "いちぶんご" or "いちぶあと"?

Google gives a good result for the former, the novice is left to wonder. Perhaps you would consider providing the certainty by inclusion in the main dictionary.
