Comments: | 1) I'm not so sure about "to be on the point of collapse", which is listed as another gloss for the same sense as "to topple over and lean at a precarious angle". 2) The way I read the definitions (confirmed, it seems to me, by examples and Google Images) it means: "to fall over, but get caught part of the way over, so that it's inclining, not completely collapsed to the ground, and possibly leaning *against* something (e.g. another object or a person) which has broken its fall, so that it still has further to fall and may therefore be somewhat unstable" 3) That's expressing it verbosely, but very explicitly, of course. I tried to capture this idea more concisely with my submission "to topple over and lean at a precarious angle, in danger of further collapse". I think it's supported by the def's I quoted: I. 倒れてもたれかかる。また、倒れそうになる。 [Perhaps you read this one as two different senses, rather than as two parts of the one sense?] and II. a)倒れて物にもたれかかる。「植木が垣根に―・っていた」 b)倒れはじめる。また、今にも倒れそうである。「―・った電柱」 [In both a and b the thing has fallen over, but has further to go. In neither case does it mean simply "to be on the point of collapse". In a, the plant has fallen over and got caught on a fence. In b, the telephone pole is leaning over precariously, and may fall further.] 4) In summary, I think "to be on the point of collapse" only captures the *second* part of the definition of 倒れ掛かる -- the part that says [また、]倒れそうになる or [また、今 にも]倒れそうである -- and misses the first part: 倒れてもたれかかる or 倒れはじめる. |

Comments: | Only 8 Google results for ["倒れかか" 債], and there is very little in those results to support the "weighed down by debt" meaning. Also, I don't see that sense in my dictionaries. It *does* make sense as a metaphor. However, it would probably be pretty obvious in context, given the literal meaning of 倒れ掛かる. So -- consider deleting the "weighed down by debt" sense? She had an attack of anemia and fell against me. |

7. | R 2013-01-05 12:05:06 Marcus Richert <...address hidden...>
Comments: | "火蒜" gets 16 results on bing (when restricting it to Japanese results). Most are false hits (i.e. "(火)蒜" etc.) but one mentions what seems to be a Chinese delicatessen, "金山火蒜". It seems the characters can be used to mean "roasted garlic" in Chinese: http://loongfuat.blogspot.se/2011/06/roasted-garlic.html http://baike.baidu.com/view/1076881.htm The "火" in place of a "大" in Kenkyusha might be a typo? Hard to tell. |

Comments: | I have now got my Google counter working and I can see that "big" gets the big hits and "fire" does not. I wonder why Kenkyusha gives "fire" [checked again with magnifying glass!!] |

5. | A* 2013-01-01 16:23:58 Francis
Refs: | See below. |
|
Comments: | In Kenkyusha, it shows the kanji as "火蒜" alonside "ニンニク" for garlic. "Fire" as opposed to "big" has some logic!! Google hits seem to show "火蒜", with a fair number of hits. After making an amendment above changing "大蒜" to "火蒜", there was a "caution" note about cross-referencing so I have restored the original entry and I shall leave it to you to make the amendment; just in case I end up losing the cross-reference link. |

7. | A* 2020-10-11 03:18:52 Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
Comments: | This was discussed in another entry, and it was agreed that our style is to avoid capitals on old/new/middle unless it was a recognized name, as in the Old Testament, etc. That said, I think that you are raising a valid point here about language identification. I see we gloss 古ノルド語 as "Old Norse", and to me that is correct. There was a language which is now known as Old Norse, with the"Old" being part of the name. (Similarly I'd translate Nynorsk as "New Norwegian" with a capital N on the New.) I wouldn't object to putting the capitals back on those language names. I'd like first to give Robin and others a chance to review and comment. |

The real hits I can find seem all to come from Kobe University's site, where the usage seems to be from old sources, like this article from 1938 (and the first hit from Kobe U): http://www.lib.kobe- u.ac.jp/das/jsp/ja/ContentViewM.jsp?
