Comments: | This seems to be the go-to word to describe separation anxiety-caused clinginess in babies/toddlers, I hear it used like this alot. Sure, in the literal sense, yu are specifically talking about the baby "chasing after" the parent, but this isn't how it's usually phrased like in English. I think this probably ought to be a separate sense. |

Based on this, I think the "iK" can come off this one. Also, the 魚を捕る entry probably can be extended by 魚を取る (13M hits) , 魚を獲る, 魚を穫る, etc. all of which get significant hits. See 1878480. |

Comments: | not necessarily preferential. saw this in an article for example: "だから、多くの企業にはいまだに「男性の文化」はあっても、「女性の文化」はな い。「男性の文化」に入り込んで、男のように働ける人はいいけれど、そうではない人 はどうしても、特別扱いという名前の排除を受けやすい。" but it's obvious that in most cases, this is what it means, but keeping both in the same "sense" gives the impression that it's always used "positively," so I thought it might be best to split them into 2. |

Comments: | I've been looking into this and thinking about it. I think that in Japanese ティラノサウルス, 等 is being used both for the genus and the species we commonly call Tyrannosaurus rex, with the latter being the most common meaning of ティラノサウルス. While it grates a bit, I think we have to regard "Tyrannosaurus rex" the common gloss of ティラノサウルス, although I'm happy to call it an abbreviation of ティラノサウルスレックス too. |

Comments: | Isn't "造語成分" just how Shinmeikai labels its kanwa entries, which means we can (mostly) ignore them? I think we're making an exception for country names because they're useful to have. What's confusing is how the kokugos classify them; there's no consistency. According to daijr, 加 (Canada) and 葡 (Portugal) are nouns but 米, 豪 and 印 aren't. Some don't even have a kanwa entry (e.g. 希 - Greece). I'm not sure any of them can really be considered nouns, but if we're going to include 英, 米, 仏, etc. in the main dictionary, we should probably include all the kanji country abbreviations that aren't totally obscure. |
|
12. | A 2019-12-31 22:06:11 Jim Breen <...address hidden...> | |
Comments: | I'll approve this. We need to look into better handling of 造語成分. |

|
Comments: | as 造語成分, 土[と]=つち. but not as a noun, which is what we currently have sense 2 as. 造語成分 are generally a mess. if と is split out, should we include the earth sense there? if not, what justification do we have for including some but not all of its 造語成分 meanings? rather than make entries for 造語成分, we should consider merging in kanjidic. that's basically how the kokugos handle it. i'll submit a separate と entry for now |

Comments: | As I commented earlier, I'm not keen to break with the references and have a 和語 like this lead with katakana. I'll close it off to shorten the queue, and reopen it for a while in case anyone else wants to comment. Possibly sense 2 can be adj-no? |

Comments: | Summary - from what I can find, at least, it appears that [1] and [2] are far and away predominantly katakana. For [3], hiragana wins out, but not by a huge margin, and [see=どす黒い] removes that ambiguity. [4] is very different from the other terms, and has a restriction already. Counts don't appear to be influenced significantly by DOS/MS-DOS. [2] generally dominates the other counts, [1] is relatively rare in general. (should these be re-ordered?). Note, for example, 短刀 gets a whole wikipedia page, on which ドス get's a short paragraph. yourei examples are all (or almost all) 脅す sense. == I changed the ドス /どす ordering after editing ドスのきいた. I won't post the long list, but if you do an n-gram search for the top 10/100 entries for ドスの and どすの You'll see that first, the list is absolutely overwhelmed by the 脅す meaning(using 効かす・利かせる and even the mistaken 聞かせる), and second, ドス is the dominant form. ドスを and どすを are similarly overwhelmed by a grammatical variation of the same structure. For the knife, while even sankoku lists primarily under どす, I suspect this is a reflection of it being a "native" and historical Japanese word. I don't know if they would ever handle such a case with ドス(「どす」とも書く). It actually appears rare that ms-dos was written as ドス. the wikipedia page for ドス doesn't even list DOS or MS-DOS as disambiguation options. Google "ドスソフト" or "ドス・ソフト" or "ドスのソフト" and you get almost nothing. Replace with "DOSソフト" or "DOSのソフト" or "MS-DOSソフト" and you'll get results. It seems the trendy thing for Japanese people to do might have been to use the English acronym, like DVD etc. |

Comments: | I'm not convinced ドス should lead. The JEs don't have it and most kokugos don't mention it. I think it's possibly noise from DOS. |
