Refs: | The note on sense 01 is more of an explanatory gloss than a note. I think sense 01 is overloaded with meaning and should be split. There's a set phrase / everyday greeting sense (こんにちは) and there's a sense of deliberately messaging / going to visit someone on some special occasion. sankoku: ③礼儀を示すために、相手をたずねること。「先生のお宅に結婚の━に行く」 I've added a new "courtesy visit" sense as sense 04. We currently only have sentences indexed to 01, 02, and 03. Other edits * Dropping [adj-no] PoS tags. * Adding [vi] PoS tags. * Changing [sl] to [col] on sense 04 (sankoku, meikyo, gg5 have this sense) * Changing [exp] PoS tag on sense 06 to [n] and adding [arch] tag (smaller kokugos don't have this sense, and we have 一挨一拶 tagged as archaic). |

Comments: | This was trickier than I thought. The GG5 sense split is maybe not all that helpful. The words listed are for the better part the same in both senses. I don't know if the extra info I added is really helpful, but it's an attempt to give the definition a little more context. |

Comments: | I don't think any of these senses are suffixes. Although it's in GG5, I think the "hiding place" sense is archaic/obsolete. It's not in the other JEs or meikyo/shinmeikai (or even daijs). Daijr's example is from the Meiji era. I don't think the "underbelly" sense is needed. The kokugos describe it as a "江戸後期の流行語". |

Comments: | 1) I'm not so sure about "to be on the point of collapse", which is listed as another gloss for the same sense as "to topple over and lean at a precarious angle". 2) The way I read the definitions (confirmed, it seems to me, by examples and Google Images) it means: "to fall over, but get caught part of the way over, so that it's inclining, not completely collapsed to the ground, and possibly leaning *against* something (e.g. another object or a person) which has broken its fall, so that it still has further to fall and may therefore be somewhat unstable" 3) That's expressing it verbosely, but very explicitly, of course. I tried to capture this idea more concisely with my submission "to topple over and lean at a precarious angle, in danger of further collapse". I think it's supported by the def's I quoted: I. 倒れてもたれかかる。また、倒れそうになる。 [Perhaps you read this one as two different senses, rather than as two parts of the one sense?] and II. a)倒れて物にもたれかかる。「植木が垣根に―・っていた」 b)倒れはじめる。また、今にも倒れそうである。「―・った電柱」 [In both a and b the thing has fallen over, but has further to go. In neither case does it mean simply "to be on the point of collapse". In a, the plant has fallen over and got caught on a fence. In b, the telephone pole is leaning over precariously, and may fall further.] 4) In summary, I think "to be on the point of collapse" only captures the *second* part of the definition of 倒れ掛かる -- the part that says [また、]倒れそうになる or [また、今 にも]倒れそうである -- and misses the first part: 倒れてもたれかかる or 倒れはじめる. |

Comments: | Only 8 Google results for ["倒れかか" 債], and there is very little in those results to support the "weighed down by debt" meaning. Also, I don't see that sense in my dictionaries. It *does* make sense as a metaphor. However, it would probably be pretty obvious in context, given the literal meaning of 倒れ掛かる. So -- consider deleting the "weighed down by debt" sense? Results from clicking [S] たおれ‐かか・る【倒れ掛(か)る】 [動ラ五(四)] 1 倒れて物にもたれかかる。「植木が垣根に―・っていた」 2 倒れはじめる。また、今にも倒れそうである。「―・った電柱」 貧血で彼女は私に倒れかかってきたShe had an attack of anemia and fell against me. |

Comments: | What is the origin of the English translation used here -- "Three Lights Strategy"? Googling suggests that it may be associated primarily with EDICT, and may not be an accepted English equivalent of 三光作戦. Certainly the phrase "Three Lights Strategy" doesn't appear in the Wikipedia article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three_Alls_Policy I believe "Three Lights Strategy" may have originated from EDICT, and if that is the case, I suggest that we delete it from the definition, as it is a lousy translation! In 三光作 戦, 三光 is a reference to the Chinese phrase 殺光、燒光、搶光 (kill all, burn completely, loot everything) 三光とは、殺光・焼光・搶光をさし、それぞれ殺し尽くす・焼き尽くす・奪い尽くすことを意 味する漢語である。(北方漢語で「~光」という接尾詞は「~しつくす」という意味にな る。) http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/燼滅作% 88%A6 So, in Chinese, 光 (as it's used in 殺光、燒光、搶光) is a verb suffix which means "completely; leaving not even a trace" -- NOT "light" (the Japanese sense of the character). So it seems a bit weird to translate 三光作戦 as the three "lights"! (Of course, 光 can also mean "light" in Chinese, amongst other things.) See also http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three_Alls_Policy "The expression "Sankō Sakusen", BASED UPON CHINESE TERMS [my emphasis], was not used by the Japanese military. Rather, it was first popularized in Japan in 1957 when a former Japanese soldier released from the Fushun war crime internment center wrote a controversial book called The Three Alls: Japanese Confessions of War Crimes in China (Japanese: 三光、日本人の中国における戦争犯罪の告白, Sankō, Nihonjin no Chūgoku ni okeru sensō hanzai no kokuhaku) (new edition: Kanki Haruo, 1979), in which a number of Japanese veterans confessed to war crimes committed under the leadership of General Yasuji Okamura. The publishers were forced to stop the publication of the book after receiving death threats from Japanese militarists and ultranationalists." |

Comments: | Clarify what kind of bamboo References for exactly what kind of bamboo this refers to are very mixed, and seems to be applied to various different species and genera (as with ササ). Notably, GG5 and koj both mention 矢竹(ヤダケ) = arrow bamboo (Pseudosasa japonica), which is unambiguous, but koj mentions in the same breath メダケ and others (esp. at synonymous 篠竹(シノダケ)) also mention this and other species of the Pleioblastus genus, so I’ve put that separately. I haven’t changed the “thin-culmed dwarf bamboo” gloss, but this looks like it could use a bit of work. |

Comments: | * Add note and kanji (non-JIS) Is there a way to have the character 髙 itself in here? (Now that non-JIS is acceptable, with care.) * I’ve added back the note "髙 as variant of 高" which becomes the still logical " as variant of 高" without 髙 (admittedly looks redundant without 髙, but not misleading). * Alternatively (or in addition?), we could put 髙 into the kanji field itself. This is what’s done over at 1884150 しんにょう for the road radical, which includes: 之繞;辶;辵;⻌ This has the advantage of degrading very gracefully, as it’s just absent if not supported. The note does make the 髙/高 connection explicit, but is perhaps not necessary if 髙 is actually in the kanji field. Same issue at 2739450 立つ崎 﨑 so probably best to be consistent. (Came up when chatting with friend, when I learned that she had this form of the character in her family – she did use the term.) |
