Explanation feels necessary as, though fundamentally similar to Abrahamic notion of “holy of holies” (innermost holy place), hence that as equivalent gloss, it is in details very different – open to public (and publicized on maps and webpages!), but often a several kilometer hike (the path to the one at Kōyasan is apparently 2 kilometers!), rather than a secret room in the back of a temple.

In 2001 I ploughed in a heap of entries from a certain source which included quite a lot of rather obvious constructions. They are in the 18xxxxxx and low 19xxxxx sequence numbers. I think this is one of them

  Comments:
No change to the above. The matter came up in another search for "にやっとした。". The full sentence was "ジャックはにやっとした"
It was certainly in the context of grinning.
In searching various ways, as you know, the site also came up with a range of entries, namely:-

ニヤッと笑う; にやっと笑う 【ニヤッとわらう(ニヤッと笑う); にやっとわらう(にやっと笑う)】 (exp) to give a grin
ニヤつく; にやつく (v5k) (See にやにや) to smirk; to grin broadly
ニヤニヤ(P); にやにや(P) (adv,n,vs) (on-mim) grinning; broad grin; smirk; (P)
ニヤリ; にやり (adv,adv-to) (on-mim) broadly grinning

In view of the meaning relating to "にや", I thought again that there could be an entry for "にやっ" on its own, then with "にやっと" it could be applied to concepts perhaps other than laugh; as potentially seems to be the case, but I cannot myself find a clear reference point. In any event, it would make my search for "にやっとした" possible if it were included.

I don't intend to waste you time on this, but when "にやっ" comes up on its own in text, it presumably has a meaning of its own.

Slight contrast with 物申:
* 物申 is announcing one’s presence
* 案内申 is requesting to be shown in
This is a bit subtle, and both are basically “hallo”, but 案内申 comes second, is compared with 頼もう & 取り次ぎ, and is the next step.
(I’m interpreting these two as “Hello, I’ve come” or “Pardon, please show me in” etc.)

  Comments:
This gets a fair number of Google hits. It is only a + b, but the problem for the searcher is the reading. Is it "ひと" or is it "いち" or what in front of "突きする"? I know Rene believes that the searcher should look up such things eleswhere. I know there is a limit to what one can do with such matters. Perhaps one should have the entry for "一" giving a fuller explanation of all the options and most usual outcomes in terms of usage. Of course, we don't have this problem in dictionaries generally because when one get the sound of "one" for "1" that is all one really needs within reason.

I hesitated before making this submission because I somewhat guessed the result, however when I dicovered the high number of entries with "一" as the prefix, I thought that I would give it a go, for example see a small selection of other existing entries:-

一度(P); ひと度; 一たび; 一とたび(io) 【いちど(一度)(P); ひとたび】 (n-adv) (1) once; one time; on one occasion; (2) (ひとたび only) temporarily; for a moment; (3) (いちど only) one degree; one tone; one musical interval; (P)
一ヶ月; 一箇月(oK); 一か月; 一ケ月 【いっかげつ】 (n) one month
一つ目 【ひとつめ】 (adj-no) one-eyed

I would like to see your site as the "one-stop" location for the needs of the Japanese language searcher, but I do understand that limits have to be place somewhere.

Anyway, as usual, I appreciate your site because I have not found any better source of information; nor indeed a more user friendly means for anyone, whatsoever their status of understanding, making a contribution.
