Refs: | nikk entry for があっと |
|
Comments: | if it's only adv-to, then the と should probably be included at the end (and the pos changed to adv.) nikk supports this with its entry for があっと. not sorted by hits because there are lots of false positives |

Comments: | Minor edit [adv-to], [on-mim], mostly ref & notes: * プログレッシブ和英中辞典 gives several more defns (which I’ve not seen in use) – could be added * This can clearly take a と (as millions of Google hits attest), and the given gloss is a [adv] as is, hence [adv-to] (Read in poem, referring to a train grinding to a stop.) |

Comments: | * Add spellings 剥き身 すき身 (Saw as すき身 on menu today; suspect this is v. common on real menus, since 剥 is a complex character and 剥き as すき is an unusual reading.) * specify *thin* slice * [fld=food] * [expl] * add secondary sense of “briefly salt-pickled”, which I suspect is archaic (they give an example from the doll play 平家女護島 (1719)) |

Comments: | But the first gloss for 興奮 is "excitement", not "to excite", which makes it a lot less ambiguous. I might be wrong but I have a feeling most users without previous knowledge of the word would assume the vs here incorrectly means "to bother (sb)" while most people would not misunderstand 興奮. It might be possible to solve this by changing the glosses around somehow, but I think a large part of the ambiguousness is in the Japanese word itself, not the translations. |

7. | A* 2018-04-25 13:35:46 Robin Scott <...address hidden...> | |
Comments: | I feel this would probably be clear from context. 興奮する means "to be excited" rather than "to excite (someone)" but we don't have a separate [vs] sense to make this explicit. There are probably countless of examples like this. |

Comments: | That restriction means that only 訊く is used for sense 3, which isn't correct. The only way to indicate that 訊く only applies to sense 3 is to add restrictions to all the other senses. A cleaner solution (and what I propose) is to split 訊く out into its own entry which points here. Most of the refs don't include it as a headword, only as a "「訊く」とも書く" note. --- I've added a couple of senses. |

Comments: | As the developer of a dictionary server (wwwjdic) I thought I should heed my own "apps and sites that use the data take on the issue of searching for these sorts of strings" advice. I did a proof-of-concept extension to the testbed version, with mixed results. What I think I'll do is add "JK" here to make it searchable, and move the topic into the issue discussion forum. |

Comments: | It's the same with things like 1LDK We don't include that in the "meanings" because it's not actually English (unlike "AIDS", etc.) I don't think it's appropriate to try putting straight Latin (or Greek or whatever) characters in the "Kanji" field. Better that apps and sites that use the data take on the issue of searching for these sorts of strings. I'll leave this open for a bit in case there's more discussion. |

Comments: | I was trying to find out what the "JK" was in the two referenced articles as I'd not run across it before. I finally had to do a Google search to find out what it meant. This would make it so people can find this entry. The full-size romaji JK doesn't map to JK (though you might be able to modify the database so all full size romaji mapped to half size), so I had to look elsewhere until I found out it meant 女子高生. I tried searching in English and in Japanese. Problem being that I'm not always using a system that has Japanese installed, so I can't always search using full size romaji. Also, even the Japanese don't always use the full size romaji, as shown in the example references. |

|
Comments: | I think we can stick with 女子高生 as the source. WRT the romanization style, (a) we usually stick to modified Hepburn in entries, and (b) the kunrei and wapuro styles of romanization would result in J and K as well. |

Comments: | * Add note and kanji (non-JIS) Is there a way to have the character 髙 itself in here? (Now that non-JIS is acceptable, with care.) * I’ve added back the note "髙 as variant of 高" which becomes the still logical " as variant of 高" without 髙 (admittedly looks redundant without 髙, but not misleading). * Alternatively (or in addition?), we could put 髙 into the kanji field itself. This is what’s done over at 1884150 しんにょう for the road radical, which includes: 之繞;辶;辵;⻌ This has the advantage of degrading very gracefully, as it’s just absent if not supported. The note does make the 髙/高 connection explicit, but is perhaps not necessary if 髙 is actually in the kanji field. Same issue at 2739450 立つ崎 﨑 so probably best to be consistent. (Came up when chatting with friend, when I learned that she had this form of the character in her family – she did use the term.) |
