12. | A* 2020-09-17 01:13:17 Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
Comments: | That's never been a hard-and-fast rule, though. We'll often put less common senses first, e.g. when there's a literal and figurative meaning. The major JEs also tend to put more common senses first but they all lead with "circle" in this case. |
|
11. | A* 2020-09-17 00:35:02 Marcus Richert <...address hidden...>
Comments: | But... the dictionary style is to put the most common meaning first. Esp. when we're talking spoken language, "yen" must be more than 2 orders of magnitude more common as a meaning for 円 than "circle" is. I don't think we should make ad-hoc exceptions on the fly either, if "circle" should come first, then we should implement a concise and clear rule/test for when a less common meaning should supersede the most common one. |
|
10. | A* 2020-09-17 00:16:07 Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
Comments: | I don't think it matters that "yen" is more common. 円/circle is an extremely common and basic word. Looks odd having it after the currency sense. |
|
9. | A* 2020-09-16 22:33:37 Marcus Richert <...address hidden...>

Comments: | This keeps coming up - someone tried to add からだ as a reading to the 身体・しんたい entry in 2019. The JEs and Koj only have しんたい for 身体. The other kokugos list 身体 as a form for からだ but have it later than 体; which matches what we have. I don't propose to merge the entries again, but I'll suggest a note on the 身体・しんたい entry similar to the one on sense 1 here. |

Comments: | I have no changes to suggest, but wanted to bring attention to this site. It wasn't well known at the time this entry was last edited. I always flip through this when I'm unsure of the reading or pitch accent for something Hearing a lot more からだ than しんたい, especially when not in a compound |

Comments: | Comments on 卑語[2]. Marked 卑語[2] as [obs] because I don't think it is usable with the sense given here. Not sure if this is [obs], [rare], [dated]. IME won't even build this word(either kanji). The reason that ngrams for 鄙言 beat 卑言 would seem to be that this term has fallen into almost complete disuse. Google results suggests it is principally vocab trivia. "language used in rural areas" is wordy, but this is not a term for anyone to use in practice either. Better that if someone search "vulgar" they don't think to use this. Given that this is rare and dated, given the kokugo definition "slang" seems out of place. jlogos has "スラング" as 類語 on 卑語 for sense [1], but we don't have "slang" there (nor do I think we should). |

Comments: | I am not the only one who thinks "red as a lobster", if anything, means "sunburned all over ones body". I don't think these idioms match, which makes this a misleading gloss. I'm not sure we have a useful idiomatic substitute. The explanation for the idiom is apparently (see last ref) that octopuses turn bright red when boiled. So the connection to hot baths is not arbitrary. Both dictionaries call out baths and alcohol specifically. Can also refer to alcohol-induced flushing, and anger, etc. No apparent connection to sunburns. I imagine "alcohol" applies due to the Japanese genetic disposition toward alcohol intolerance(cheeks may flush red). Westerners don't turn red from drinking (generally). We also don't have a hot-bath culture, so we seem to be lacking for a truly equivalent idiom. Here's an illustrated octopus with a towel on its head in a bath: お湯に浸かって茹蛸になるタコ https://www.ac-illust.com/main/detail.php?id=1069549&word=お湯に浸かって茹蛸になるタコ&searchId= Here's an angry octopus: 怒るタコ / ゆでだこ https://japaclip.com/angry-octopus/ |

Comments: | That restriction means that only 訊く is used for sense 3, which isn't correct. The only way to indicate that 訊く only applies to sense 3 is to add restrictions to all the other senses. A cleaner solution (and what I propose) is to split 訊く out into its own entry which points here. Most of the refs don't include it as a headword, only as a "「訊く」とも書く" note. --- I've added a couple of senses. |

Comments: | Removed [uk]. What is our official cutoff for [uk] by the way? This is very close to a 50/50 split, so probably not controversial to remove here (encountered myself in song lyrics with kanji). But it now occurs to me that I've been treating it as 50%, and that has always appeared to me to be the practice here. I've never participated in a discussion on this question, but it seems like [uk] should imply kana-only should be well above 50%. "Usually" seems quite a bit stronger to me than "more often than not". Or, phrased differently, it seems like if you are highly likely to encounter the kanji form, and if you wouldn't look odd using the kanji form, then [uk] might be misleading. Incidentally (reading earlier comments), this was also a "star studded sky"-type context. ==== I googled "what percent is usually". Google returns: https://grammar.reverso.net/frequency/ always 100 percent of the time (or almost 100%). usually about 80 percent of the time. <----- 80%, seems close to my intuition often more than half of the time. sometimes less than half of the time. rarely about 20 percent of the time. never at no time. Whatever our intentions might be, or might have been, it seems reasonable to expect that an average reader who sees "usually kana" on a term is going to expect something in the 80%+ range, not 50.01%+. |

(and again, the many significant differences I mentioned before) There are many knives that a layman wouldn't be able to tell apart, just to look at them, that are nevertheless in very distinct and different categories. (the same applies to, e.g., axes) ...and many なた do not have that distinctive rectangular shape, as is clear from the references I mention. Note that 剣鉈 and 鉈鎌 are types of 鉈. |

Comments: | A cleaver is a butcher/kitchen knife. It has a completely different purpose and also possess very different blades, to a nata. A lot broader blade (a lot broader than the handle, notably) and though they are relatively thick and sturdy, they are significantly less so, than a nata. A lot of typical uses of a nata (especially splitting wood), would utterly ruin any cleaver. The closest thing to a nata, would be a machete or a hunting knife. (and ken'nata do look like the latter, as well as being used as such, in addition to its other uses) It is neither, however, so it would be wrong to call it such. The angle is notable (though not universal/required), but I guess it's not really necessary to mention. Also the blade is often of uniform breadth (basically a rectangle) aside from ken'nata (剣鉈), which have a more typical knife shape as well as usually being straight, but the same applies to that, so no need to mention it either, I suppose. Speaking of which: Adding an entry for 剣鉈 may be a good idea. |
