Comments: | I am not the only one who thinks "red as a lobster", if anything, means "sunburned all over ones body". I don't think these idioms match, which makes this a misleading gloss. I'm not sure we have a useful idiomatic substitute. The explanation for the idiom is apparently (see last ref) that octopuses turn bright red when boiled. So the connection to hot baths is not arbitrary. Both dictionaries call out baths and alcohol specifically. Can also refer to alcohol-induced flushing, and anger, etc. No apparent connection to sunburns. I imagine "alcohol" applies due to the Japanese genetic disposition toward alcohol intolerance(cheeks may flush red). Westerners don't turn red from drinking (generally). We also don't have a hot-bath culture, so we seem to be lacking for a truly equivalent idiom. Here's an illustrated octopus with a towel on its head in a bath: お湯に浸かって茹蛸になるタコ https://www.ac-illust.com/main/detail.php?id=1069549&word=お湯に浸かって茹蛸になるタコ&searchId= Here's an angry octopus: 怒るタコ / ゆでだこ https://japaclip.com/angry-octopus/ |

Refs: | Only need the singular form. ただし、ファーストフードのお店では、タコス一つでも注文できるところがあるそうです。その場合はもちろん”I'd like a taco.”「タコス一つ下さい」。 . Perhaps the English plural form was used as a model for the Japanese loanword in order to distinguish it from タコ (octopus) — just my speculation :-) — rather than to express plurality. . ALC: タコス taco〔メキシコ料理〕 エビのタコス shrimp taco《料理》 ソフト・タコス soft taco《料理》〔軟らかいトルティーヤを使ったタコス〕 . ALC also has some ungrammatical examples, possibly resulting from dictionary entries such as the current EDICT entry, with its inclusion of the plural form: タコスソースをかけてできあがり。 Pour tacos sauce over it. . タコス(西: taco)は、メキシコ料理やテクス・メクス料理(アメリカ南部料理)におけるサンドイッチに似た軽食向けの料理である。 http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/タコス . Here's a different theory about the origin of the plural form タコス in Japanese: "taco" は可算名詞ですので、いずれもお考えの通りだと思います。複数形 "tacos" の英語での発音については、以下のオンライン辞書[Merriam- Webster]で確認できます。敢えてカナで書くなら、「タコズ」というよりは「ターコゥズ」に近いかと。 なお、語源であるスペイン語でも、単数形は "taco"、複数形は "tacos" なのですが、スペイン語の s は[s] としか読まないため、複数形は「タコズ」では なく「タコス」となります(日本語にはこの複数形がそのまま入って来ている訳ですね)。 http://www5a.biglobe.ne.jp/~hippo/oralAles9.htm |

Refs: | See Instead: 足並みが揃う 足並みを揃える Started because I didn't think this gloss matched very well, then discovered that there was already a better entry in the affirmative. Essentially, even if the negative might be a little more popular, it is still redundant. This isn't "failing to reach an agreement". It's "failing to get on the same page", maybe "failing to see eye to eye", "failing to work in unison". If you like any of these, I think they should be added on the main entries 足並みが揃う and 足並みを揃える。 From the earlier reference: "lack of concerted action among the strikers", "concerted" was the key term. "to act in concert" . The strikers are failing to work as a cohesive group to attain their goals (they are disorganized, they don't agree on demands, etc...) Because these are ordinary verb structures, the alternative is to add every negated variant of note: 足並みを揃えない 353 5.5% 足並みをそろえない 240 3.7% 足並みを揃えず 58 0.9% 足並みをそろえず 24 0.4% 足並みが揃わない 2278 35.4% 足並みがそろわない 1517 23.6% 足並みが揃わず 1194 18.5% 足並みがそろわず 745 11.6% 足並みがそろわぬ 30 0.5% |
