Split up as conceptually separate: 1. room to *receive* guest (at a house, say) 2. passenger seating area (on a plane) 3. lodging (at a hotel or on a boat) This is used in various compounds, where the different senses get confusing: 客室乗務員 plane cabin attendant 客室稼働率/客室稼動率 hotel occupancy rate (Saw on a flyer for an airline.) |

Comments: | > sense 1 does not appear valid for すりつける This sounds plausible, but I was reluctant to press the issue without better evidence. Koj, obunsha, and nikkoku all include 「なすりつける。」 in their definitions for すりつける, which I interpret to mean that 「すりつける」 can have the "wipe/smear/etc." meaning. A google web search gets about 600 hits for "泥をすりつけ", which I think corresponds to that meaning. However, it might be worth changing the sense order. The "press against" sense seems to be far more common for こすりつける and すりつける. > sense 3 is obsolete for すりつける (daijisen) For this meaning of すりつける, daijs and daijr cite a short story collection published in 1902. Koj also has the "match" meaning for すりつける, but does not have it for こすりつける. It could be obsolete for both readings, since I don't see it in any of the smaller kokugos (meikyo, shinmeikai, etc.). The n-grams don't show a lot of support for it. Refs: | Unmerging from entry 1298890. The first sense seems to mean wiping or applying something to a surface by means of friction, rubbing, etc. This meaning is shared with なすりつける. The "nuzzle against" and "strike a match" senses are a little odd. Daijisen merges them into a single sense in its entry for こすりつける, but splits them into two senses in its entry for すりつける. Comments: | * Add food sense (seen both as bento and as noodles, the latter repeatedly) * Alt spelling 割子 (koj mentions, and by far most common) and 割籠 (koj) * mention lid * Remove [io] – there’s no ambiguity here, just typical contraction, and dicts often write 破子 or 破籠 (e.g., koj) (We generally reserved [io] for when there’s ambiguity, like wago/kango, right? 気配り(きくばり) can’t be written as 気配 b/c of confusion with けはい) (also for verbs on their own (e.g., 行なう), but not in the middle of compounds, right?) |

For example, Daina Chiba uses the phrase often in his book. https://dainachiba.github.io/RiichiBooks/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rummy#Going_out "going mahjong" is attested by the wikipedia article.
