Comments: | Remove [adv] (implied by [adv-to]) Some tweaking to glosses – some examples etc. (it’s already quite good though!) BTW, re: [vs] – at least senses 1,2,3 “flutter”, “flicker”, “appear and disappear” certainly take する (as in daijr examples). Others presumably can potentially take する. |

Comments: | Came for the kanji stats on [rK][sK]. (I am also suspicious about this being [news1] because this is *such* a common name. But it's still a fairly common word, so whatever I suppose...) Can't really compare the bare term because it's a common name. So I looked for some collocations. sankoku gives 並木, daijs gives only 並木. only nikk lists 並樹, which feels like a historic form. Yourei has 50 actual results with 並樹, so it exists. 73 examples of 並み木. 4,338 examples of 並木。 And yourei, if my gut feeling isn't off, seems a bit overrepresented with old text (for copyright reasons I imagine). On twitter, 並み木の下 has ~10 matches in the history of twitter. 樹木の下 actually gets a hit ~every other day. 並木の下 gets ~10 hits/day. Based on the somewhat surprising twitter result, I'd guess I'd lean [rK] for 並樹. Might be being used for "poetic" effect. Should probably be visible in a result if searched for. 並み木 feels like a perfect [sK] candidate. Rare, nonstandard only in furigana, shouldn't be learned, should be searchable... Wouldn't hate it though if 並樹 were also [sK]. Since I am here, also pluralized "roadside trees". sankoku: 通りの両がわに並べて植えた木. I don't think 並ぶ can apply to *one* tree. Actually specifies that both sides of the road must be planted. I think you'd have to contort yourself to point at one roadside tree, and say "that one tree there is a 並木". This ref also had it pluralized: 研究社 新和英中辞典での「並木」の英訳 なみき 並木 a row of trees roadside trees. |

Comments: | In response to Jim's comment that caulking is also used in metalworking: But can かしめる refer to caulking? Caulking involves inserting a (relatively) soft substance into a seam, while swaging involves squeezing or deforming a piece of metal. They are completely different processes. I checked through many pages of images of かしめる and did not see even one that looked like caulking. The e-dictionary definitions I have seen (along the lines of 接合部分にはめこまれた爪や金具を工具で打ったり締めたりして接合部を固くとめる。 「鳩目金具を- ・ める」) (to the extent that I understand them!) apply to swaging only. From what I've seen so far, "caulking" looks like a complete miss for this word. |

Comments: | A kinda funny word – the similar/related (and simpler) 青雲(せいうん) and 青雲(あおくも) also have the literal sense of “blue (-ish) cloud” but also “blue sky” (presumably from reflection). Use “azure” as it’s more evocative and poetic-sounding (corresponding to old, complicated kanji). Saw in a garden name. |

Comments: | Saw in 静と動 today, but can of course stand alone. (Seems esp. used in the expression though, hence link.) Split “stillness (no movement)” from “quiet (no noise)”, as per koj – obviously related, but feels distinct. Also, contrast with 静か, which is (IME) much more frequently used for “quiet, gentle” rather than “stillness” (also has that sense, but secondary). |
