-potential merge with かけあがる. 駆け上る gets more hits than 駆け登る, but many are very likely for かけあがる, therefore putting 駆け登る first for this entry

Just to add the headword which appeared in the text which I was reading.

Because of the matching kanji, maybe there could be a cross-reference with the following entry:-

駆け上る; 駆け上がる; 駆上る 【かけあがる】 (v5r,vi) to run up

As for meaning, I would prefer to see "to gallop up," but "to run up" also fits context of the text which I was reading.

Okay, I'll drop the こす* and す* forms from this entry and propose that we restore entry 1595860.

I don't see "to nuzzle against" used in any of the kokugo/JE examples for なすりつける. I think that meaning might only apply to すりつける and こすりつける.
It seems sense [1] for なすりつける is used more in the sense of rubbing dirt onto clothes, ointment onto a wound, paint onto a canvas, etc.

My first thought was "no way" as I was taught that わたし and わたくし were essentially the same. But I agree that the politeness, and slightly feminine nuance, not to mention the later senses, make it an uncomfortable combination. I've proposed a split.

Aside: I first heard わたくし spoken in 1982 when we took my elder daughter (then 10) to a Girls Scouts meeting in Nagano-ken. They had a formal "promise" recital which included use of わたくし. I've also heard it used by males in formal speeches.

I see we have about 15 XXしげ entries. Two (苛立たし気, 涼し気) include the XXし気 form but the rest don't. They all seem to get some hits, so it probably won't hurt to fill them in. I may be off the track, but it seems quite valid.

  Comments:
The addition to the above is less usual than the main entry, but it still picks up quite a few Google hits.

My main reason for suggesting this addition is this: it helps the searcher understand the use of "げ" as used in this position. You do have a separate entry for "げ[気]" showing its use as a qualifier to create "seeming" and that is helpful, providing one knows what to search for.

However, because you already have the above entry, it would not be a detriment to show that "げ" equals "気", moreover, it does exist as a used form. Sometimes, in other dictionaries it is the added on bit which causes the trouble for the novice because the dictionary composers seem to assume that the user knows either the reading of the added on kanji or the kanji when only a reading is given. Unlike many other dictionaries, your dictionary is very helpful in this respect. Your dictionary goes the little extra step to help the novice make sense of something which the expert takes for granted [no doubt forgetting where they themselves started from in the process of learning].

だい [spec1]
1. [prt] [fam]
▶ marks wh-question (what, where, who)
2. [prt] [chn]
▶ emphasizes one's belief in one's own judgment or conclusion as being express to another person

History:

  Comments:
Note the "chn" on this sense - "children's language". You've heard kids saying things like "xxxxxx, yes" when they want confirmation? That's all this is showing. I think you've over-analyzed it, and the revised gloss gets away from what it really is.
2. A* 2012-06-30 17:32:30  Francis
  Comments:
I am not sure how one can "strengthen" one's judgment by the use of an additional sound in the communication. In my way of thinking, the communicator simply uses the additional sound to emphasize his or her belief in the value of the judgment being expressed. The actual judgment being expressed does not become better or worse in quality depending upon the additional sound being added [i.e., "だい"] or not added.

My change is a little wordy, but if you agree with the point then I am sure a simplification will jump to your mind. [Perhaps I should add "だい" to the last comment to emphasize the point that I really believe that you will find a simpler way of stating what I have stated. Perhaps you will state that the addition of "だい" cetainly does not add strength to my judgement; it is simply an obvious conclusion.]

* Add direct name (“straight-from-the-pot”)
* Elaborate explanation – the distinguishing feature (and origin of the name) is specifically the “pulled from the pot, not soaked in cold water” feature; it’s a bit technical, but this is an unfamiliar dish in English.
* Also, “sauce” is a better gloss for つゆ here than “broth” (dipping sauce, not soupy broth)
* [fld=food]
* tag [expl] as such

* Add food sense (seen both as bento and as noodles, the latter repeatedly)
* Alt spelling 割子 (koj mentions, and by far most common) and 割籠 (koj)
* mention lid
* Remove [io] – there’s no ambiguity here, just typical contraction, and dicts often write 破子 or 破籠 (e.g., koj)
(We generally reserved [io] for when there’s ambiguity, like wago/kango, right? 気配り(きくばり) can’t be written as 気配 b/c of confusion with けはい) (also for verbs on their own (e.g., 行なう), but not in the middle of compounds, right?)

できるとしたら
1. [exp]
▶ if it (you) can do (something)

History:
2. R 2012-07-05 19:14:00  Rene Malenfant <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
Again, we have entries for both できる and としたら, which can be used after any verb. No dictionary reference, and I don't see anything that makes this combo special. Could perhaps warrant an entry as a conjunction meaning "if possible", but that's only part of much broader standard usage.
1. A* 2012-07-02 10:29:05  Francis
  Comments:
It gets a mass of Google hits. I guess that the meaning of the expression is invariably context based; especially starting off a statement. It was in the text which I was reading as an opening statemeent followed by "、" then the statement continued with a suggested action.

I do not see it used with kanji. The "できる[出来る]" is not usually kanji based, as far as I can see.

One can, of course, add up the parts and make sense of the expression, but as is often the case, such an expression gathers its own shorter meaning which is understood by the natural user in context.

I recognize the value of your earlier comment, namely: "I think you've over-analyzed it, and the revised gloss gets away from what it really is." Indeed, that is the real problem of the novice who is trying to learn, we often miss the sense of simplicity. That is the great value of your many entries on such topics, it brings the over-thinking novice back down to earth.

I believe what you're looking for are these:
物【もん】(3) (uk) used to express emotional involvement
な(1) (sentence end, mainly masc.) indicates emotion or emphasis
So, it's just saying "this is terrible/awful/harsh/cruel" (whatever 酷い sense/gloss is appropriate to the context), with もん and な adding feeling/emphasis.
1. A* 2012-07-02 11:40:26  Francis
  Comments:
I am not quite sure about how to tackle this one. The above is the reading from the text. It gets a good measure of Google hits.

In a sense what I am looking for in your dictionary is something similar to the entry for:-

め 《奴》 (suf) (1) (uk) derogatory suffix (referring to others) (e.g. "damn; damned fool"); (2) humble suffix (referring to oneself)

This gives a specific meaning for a sentence-ending suffix where a sound is used, which at first thought may be related to "目". However, your site removes the doubt. For example in a text which may read, "ガツガツ食いしん"ぼうめ," one gets the right meaning from searching your site, i.e., ending up with the derogatory nature intended as apposed to thinking about some form counter or the like.

Now, with regard to this submission, if there were an entry for "もん" as a suffix in much the same way as "め" one could reach a conclusion related to "ひどい" or whatever else preceded "もん". If the entry also requires "な" to make sense, then that could be added. However, the only entry which one has which may fit as a clue is:-

問 【もん】 (suf,ctr) counter for questions; (P)

However, we are not looking for a counter, but the concept of a question may fit the bill.

If one goes to your combined dictionary one gets the following:-

ひどいもんだ I ask you; WI1

Now one is wondering. What originally seemed like a text with a questioning ending, now seems that it could have idiomatic concepts which are not easy to find. Maybe, by including the simple questioning meaning for the sentence ending suffix "もん" you could resolve this doubting.
