Comments: | I am not suggesting a change to the above because I cannot find a suitable meaning for "ざかる". The nearest I can find is "盛る 【さかる】 (v5r,vi) (1) to prosper; to flourish; (2) to copulate (animals)" and that does not seem fit too well. The example sentence is "船は岸壁からしだいに遠ざかって行った。 The boat moved slowly away from the quay". This does not have the context of being "far off [遠]". However, your [A] link may, somewhat, confirm the sample sentence, namely:- 遠ざかる back away bear away bear off draw apart fade in the distance step away walk away The notion of "fading in the distance [[from the [A] link]" would suit the text which I was reading [...遠ざかって行く音が...]. Perhaps your experts can find a balance in the entries in the dictionary, but I am making this submission because up to now I cannot, save for the observation immediately above. |

Comments: | Hi, it could be just me, but I have little idea what a "desk pad" is. I thought at first it meant a pad containing lots of sheets of paper. Google image search seemed inconclusive (lots of pictures but I still wasn't sure of the purpose of this item), then at goo dictionary I find "desk pad" explained as "a sheet of plastic (placed under a sheet of paper when one is writing)", which clarifies things a lot. You may want to consider explaining it futher here too.. |

Comments: | I won't lose any sleep if it's kept but I'm with Marcus on this one. If every use of a word is accompanied by an explanation of its meaning, it's not a real Japanese word. There are plenty of English language articles that mention 和製英語 terms but you won't find them in an English dictionary unless they're used in English (e.g. salaryman). I think we should apply the same standard here with 英製和語 terms. |

|
Comments: | 6 years later but I've got to say it's still obvious to me that this shouldn't be an entry. It's demonstrably not a Japanese word -- only an English one. As far as Google can tell us, it was only ever used by English speakers in English in Japan, never in Japanese by Japanese speakers, outside of an extremely limited amount of commenting on said usage by English speakers in Japan. I'm not saying (and wasn't saying) that it couldn't be possible for a reverse 和製英語 (英製和語?) thing to happen where a word minted by foreigners in Japan ends up entering the Japanese language - I'm just saying it clearly didn't happen here. The usage of the word among non-Japanese was merely *discussed* in Japanese. That doesn't mean it was ever *used* in Japanese. |

Comments: | sorry, just remembered there is a present form too, -まう it's in 名古屋弁辞典 as "やってもらう、やってしまう" and 大阪弁普及会's list as まう (for しまう) I think the past tense is much more common though. "やってもたん" 1,170,000 results "やってまうん" 22,200 results "いってまうわ" 1,840,000 results "いってもたわ" 22,600,000 results "殺してまう" 931,000 results "殺してもた" 6,520,000 results though again the number of hits seems way inflated. |

Comments: | it's an aux-v "してもうた" 18,500,000 results 殺してもうた 3,390,000 results etc. (though these numbers seem gravely inflated, something about the kana throwing google off it seems) but always past-tense, i.e. you can't just say "やってもう". a bit tricky. should it be exp? |

Comments: | I can see what's happening. I create merged entries for the glossing file after a simple sort, and since のうりき sorts before のうりょく, they are combined in that order. I have just modified the merge utility so that if the merging entry contains the tag "(P)", it will go first, *unless* it is a one of the pseudo-entries tagged "<<verb stem>>". It seems to work OK. This fiddle, which will go live tomorrow, affects about 350 entries. I'm leaving this open as I need to amend the Tatoeba index for 能力, and that site is currently down. |

Comments: | When using Text Glossing, the result for 能力 is as follows: 能力 【のうりき】 (n) {Buddh} (See 寺男) low-ranking priest who does manual labour at a temple; male temple employee; 【のうりょく】 ; (n) ability; faculty; (P); ED Would it be possible to have 能力 【のうりょく】 appear first in that lineup? And maybe the sample sentence should be removed from the following entry :-) 能力 【のうりき】 (n) {Buddh} (See 寺男) low-ranking priest who does manual labour at a temple; male temple employee 彼はすぐれた能力をもっていた。 His talent was of a high order. |

4. | A* 2012-06-07 14:50:42 Marcus
Comments: | "order of" is of course more ambiguous than "comprising" but shouldn't "order of birds" etc. also be made less ambiguous then by including the article? i.e. turning it into "an order of birds." using only "of" will be ambiguous in either case, but since it's not the main, actual definition but just an explanatory tag meant to guide understanding, it's my opinion that a bit of ambiguity is permissible. |
|
3. | A 2012-06-07 14:14:31 Rene Malenfant <...address hidden...>
Comments: | again, for comparison: "Sphenisciformes is THE order of penguins" "Sphenisciformes is AN order of birds" without the article, the intended meaning is ambiguous. |
|
2. | A 2012-06-07 14:13:18 Rene Malenfant <...address hidden...>
Comments: | Sphenisciformes is 'THE order of penguins' but if you're not including the article here, it's totally ambiguous and is more naturally interpreted as 'AN order of penguins', which is incorrect as it suggests that penguins belong to more than one order. Please use the unambiguous 'comprising' when appropriate. |

▶ group of death ▶ [expl] tournament group containing many strong teams |
7. | A 2018-06-17 14:44:54 Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
Comments: | The difference is that 死の組/"group of death" is not technical sports lingo. It appears in news articles aimed at the general public, but is not quite ubiquitous enough to be understood by everyone, especially without context. |
|
6. | A* 2018-06-17 03:25:02 Marcus Richert <...address hidden...>
Comments: | I'm perfectly OK with leaving something like the expl in, I just think it's a little unnecessary. I'd be surprised if I really understood even 1/10th of the translations for the [baseb]-tagged entries but I don't know that it's necessary to provide lengthy explanations to each one of them because of that. If you're interested enough in sports to read a text where an expression like "死の組" is actually used, you'll probably understand what it means, is my thinking. But if you prefer to keep it in, that's OK with me. |
