Comments: | "Korean people" can refer to Koreans as an ethnic group. I felt it was a more accurate term in this context. But if it's important to mention citizenship, I think this is better. I don't think the 在日朝鮮人 x-ref should have been dropped. North Korean "Zainichi" are not 在日韓国人. |

Comments: | but "Korean" plays the same role in "Korean person" as in "Korean national" - if it can refer to both Koreas in "... person", can't it in "... national" too? I feel the citizenship part is very important. This is often the only way these people really are Korean - by citizenship. Linguistically, culturally, they're often entirely Japanese. Some are not even fully ethnically Korean but half-Japanese but still "Zainichi Korean" by virtue of their passport. |

I feel that Chinese-derived readings which have no currency in Japanese, e.g. don't appear at all in 漢和字典, should not be included. |

Comments: | Note the "chn" on this sense - "children's language". You've heard kids saying things like "xxxxxx, yes" when they want confirmation? That's all this is showing. I think you've over-analyzed it, and the revised gloss gets away from what it really is. |
|
2. | A* 2012-06-30 17:32:30 Francis
Comments: | I am not sure how one can "strengthen" one's judgment by the use of an additional sound in the communication. In my way of thinking, the communicator simply uses the additional sound to emphasize his or her belief in the value of the judgment being expressed. The actual judgment being expressed does not become better or worse in quality depending upon the additional sound being added [i.e., "だい"] or not added. My change is a little wordy, but if you agree with the point then I am sure a simplification will jump to your mind. [Perhaps I should add "だい" to the last comment to emphasize the point that I really believe that you will find a simpler way of stating what I have stated. Perhaps you will state that the addition of "だい" cetainly does not add strength to my judgement; it is simply an obvious conclusion.] |

Comments: | adj+noun is almost never a dictionary entry, in this case, even more so because the noun is こと, which can be added to any adjective. Therefore, this should not be an entry. |
|
1. | A* 2012-06-26 18:26:34 Francis
Comments: | A + B is a possible reason for not including this. However, to what degree is it idiomatic? It seems to have that tenor of usage which may influence you to include it. Google hits are obviously many. The text which I was reading fits more the notion of "a bad business", rather than simply a harsh thing, etc.. "A fine thing" makes sense in context, which in normal usage if someone said, "Well, that's a fine thing," they would mean that it was bad; but perhaps in the meanings above it should be qualified by a note of the negative nature of "fine thing." Your [A] link gives a good flavour of usage. However, the A + B is perhaps demonstrated by the other entries from your combined dictionary:- ひどいことになって in deep shit (vulg); in the shit (poo) (vulg); WI1 ひどいことになる get oneself into a mess; WI1 ひどい言葉 【ひどいことば】 bad language; rank language; sanguinary language; WI1 ひどい言葉で 【ひどいことばで】 in strong language; WI1 ひどい言葉の応酬 【ひどいことばのおうしゅう】 exchange of asperities; WI3 ひどいことを言う 【ひどいことをいう】 make hurtful gaffe; make outrageous remarks; WI3 ひどいことをする do bad things; make a beast of oneself; pimp someone over; WI1 Nevertheless, in my way of thinking they all have specific meanings beyond A + B, hence this submission for the above; perhaps as a starter, perhaps not! |

Comments: | Speakers are going to have to learn rules. In Japanese, after an 'n' sound, an 'h' sound usually becomes 'b' or 'p'. It's not the job of a dictionary to contain an entry for everything that can be produced by a rule. An entry has to be idiomatic and stand on its own. I don't think this does (there's nothing to set it apart from the scores of other possible 何〜か entries), and I still don't think this should be an entry. Similar as we have done for other entries, I have added a note to the entry for -本 w.r.t. pronunciation. |
|
4. | A* 2012-07-01 23:47:25 Francis
Comments: | The point is well understood. You could indeed delete all the existing entries of "何Xか=some" from the dictionary and just enter something to help the searcher to find a global entry which worked for all examples. However, my point is that it is more often the reading which causes the problem. I think that the problem is the word "dictionary" and the concept that if an entry is not in another major dictionary then it should not be in your dictionary. If the great OED had worked on that basis it would not have reached 20+volumns nor over half a million words of all sort with all types of expanatory notes. It is of course your dictionary and your views must remain, however, I would not wish to box myself in by making sure that an entry had to be in another dictionary or even that a word or expression is not fit to be in a tool which is defined as "a dictionary". However, I am always grateful to discover in your dictionary many entries; which entries, based upon such exclusive criteria, should never have been included or should now be deleted. For me the criteria for such a tool which you have created should be simple: would this entry help someone who seeks to understand something about the Japanese language? Naturally, degrees of common sense come into play; as always. |
|
3. | A* 2012-06-30 22:27:24 Rene Malenfant <...address hidden...>
Comments: | 何Xか=some (...things), where X becomes a counter could be used for every single counter. This is the result of a hyper-productive rule and should not be an entry, IMO. |
|
2. | A* 2012-06-26 22:20:51 Francis
Comments: | Just an added note of support for inclusion. I have just come across the following in the main dictionary:- 何者か 【なにものか】 (n) someone |
|
1. | A* 2012-06-26 19:01:08 Francis
Comments: | Your [A] link helps with meaning. Google hits are in abundance, its meaning is basic; but if it was in your dictionary the researcher could also find the reading. You have a good variety for the options on "何" with additions, but I could not find this one. The sentence which I was reading was basic, namely: "チッコレートを何本か出した。" The meaning is clear. The Japanese speaker would not hesitate over how the speak it. The novice may pick it up in a text book, if the entry could be found with ease. As for me, your site is the ideal place to remove the doubts which may exist. |

Comments: | Google hits are high. Your [A] link is well representing the use of this expression. You have entries in the combined dict which are helpful, but perhaps this should be in the main dictionary. Frequently it is followed by "か". Maybe, if you included the above an entry with "か" could be added or even in some way included with the above in some form of explanatory expansion. |

Comments: | Hi. There are many cases where an initial dictionary search throws up no exact results but says "longer match available", with a link, yet following the link just gives the message "No matches were found for this key!". 翻訳語 is one random example, but it happens frequently to me, and is somewhat annoying. It would be good to stop that "longer match available" text appearing unless there really is something more available. |
