Comments: | This was in the text which I was reading as: "...を考えぶかげに眺めていた。"; which I took to mean "someone was looking thoughtfully at ...". When checking on your site for confirmation, I could not find this proposed entry, nor simply "ぶかげに". I thought that this potential suffix may have been "風影"、but I could not find that either so maybe my thoughts were wrong. A little more search came up with this: "とアリスは、考えぶかげにいいました。 said Alice thoughtfully: - Lewis Carroll"; which gave confirmation to my initial thoughts. I have shown the reference. If your experts find support, then it would be good to include this; although the Google hits are not too much. If your experts wanted to include just the suffix, the Google gives many more hits for that; assuming that I am correct in my thougts. |

Comments: | "...歩いていった。 体じゅうに土をあびてひどく怒った。" If, when I searched for "体じゅう" the existing entry of "体中; 身体中 【からだじゅう】" had come up, I may have questioned the text which I was reading. However, it was a bird who showered earth over its whole body [at least, as I understood the context]. Thus, the notion of throughout the body, as in the sense of - say - blood circulation, may not be applicable. I hope that is helpful. |
|
2. | A* 2012-06-03 23:33:04 Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
Comments: | I think this is probably "体中 (からだじゅう)", which is already an entry. Please quote in full the sentence you were reading. |
|

Comments: | This was in the text that I was reading and the above meaning is compatible with context. It gets a good measure of Google hits. It comes up in your [A] link. Whilst this is a basic a + b, because of its context with the body, and because you had the "RH" when I searched, it seemed a better idea to have it completed in the main dictionary than lost incomplete in the combined. With the use of "じゅう" in general use as the suffix [which I take in this case to be 中], the novice researcher may appreciate a defined entry; especially with the same reading for "体重 【 たいじゅう 】 body weight (usu. one's own)". Perhaps, if I am not incorrect in my reasoning about this promotion, it would be a good idea to have a cross-reference so that the searcher can compare the two meanings for the same reading. |

Comments: | 気づかない is not exactly "awaiting promotion". It's an entry in the Life Sciences Dictionary - I don't know why they put it in. This is a fork, so I'll have to reject it. |
|
3. | A* 2012-06-04 10:31:30 Francis
Comments: | Probably not. I too read the context in the mode of the negative of "気づく". But, as I often do with the ordinary, I checked your site to see if there was any other dimensions of meaning in play. When, I came across the above which idendified the notion of "oblivion", it made me think that one may also need to hear the tone and manner of the speaker to complete the true sense of the statement being made. The net result was that if there was a context of oblivion attached to "気づかない" then that would be very helpful in considering such text. In general, negatives of positives are fairly straightforward in meaning, but when notions of heart, mind, spirit, nature, etc. [気] come into the equation, then maybe there is another dimension in play. The above entry awaiting promotion seemed to raise the possibility. |

Comments: | This is not an "a+b". it's simply the negative inflection of 気付く/気づく. I really can't see anything special about the meaning. I am very keen to get idiomatic usage recorded here, but this is totally regular. Am I missing something? |
|
1. | A* 2012-06-03 21:04:35 Francis
Comments: | Perhaps a little too far for those opposed to a + b, but the connotation of the oblivion, etc., is not quite the same as the negative of the following:- 気付く(P); 気づく 【きづく】 (v5k) to notice; to recognize; to recognise; to become aware of; to perceive; to realize; to realise; (P) However, it is easy to say that "I did not notice" may equal the same as "oblivion", but in the contect of my reading the text which included the expression the nuance seemed to match the "oblivion". But, what a Japanese person may have in their mind in such usage, I guess your experts will be better informed than me. You also have the following:- 気づかない 【きづかない】 (aj) unaware; (aj) unnoticed; LS |

Comments: | No change to the above. The matter came up in another search for "にやっとした。". The full sentence was "ジャックはにやっとした" It was certainly in the context of grinning. In searching various ways, as you know, the site also came up with a range of entries, namely:- ニヤッと笑う; にやっと笑う 【ニヤッとわらう(ニヤッと笑う); にやっとわらう(にやっと笑う)】 (exp) to give a grin ニヤつく; にやつく (v5k) (See にやにや) to smirk; to grin broadly ニヤニヤ(P); にやにや(P) (adv,n,vs) (on-mim) grinning; broad grin; smirk; (P) ニヤリ; にやり (adv,adv-to) (on-mim) broadly grinning In view of the meaning relating to "にや", I thought again that there could be an entry for "にやっ" on its own, then with "にやっと" it could be applied to concepts perhaps other than laugh; as potentially seems to be the case, but I cannot myself find a clear reference point. In any event, it would make my search for "にやっとした" possible if it were included. I don't intend to waste you time on this, but when "にやっ" comes up on its own in text, it presumably has a meaning of its own. |

1. | A* 2012-06-03 22:03:12 Francis
Comments: | "きそう" comes up as many entries, but not in the context of the usage in the text which I was reading. When the "に" is added, nothing comes up. However, Google search reveal a great deal and your [A] link shows a good number of examples which match context of my reading. I appreciate that "な" and "に" are not usually in the main entry, but perhaps there is a need for some exceptions when the main part is the same as the reading of so many other entries. Anyway, I hope that is helpful. At least, you will know the journey which I took from the travelling dictionary to your site in order to find a basic meaning in confirmation of my initial thoughts. Of course, one can look up "き[気]" and then "そう" and try to blend meanings, but the one who does not know would not end up with a certain outcome. |
