Comments: | As far as possible the meaning(s) should be established in the gloss(es). Having a 19-word amplification attached to the first gloss is a sign that something is amiss, especially when it repeats what is already in other glosses.) I'm grouping related glosses, and I agree with Rene that an example like "e.g. when having difficulty expressing oneself" is not really appropriate as the word can used for all sort of irritations. |

Comments: | clarify sense further, with more examples; hopefully usage is clear now. (GG5 gives 3 examples of irritation at people being clumsy, so it seems worth noting.) This is tricky b/c AFAICT it’s got pretty narrow usage, but equivalent English terms are pretty broad (e.g., neighbor’s dog barking is irritating, but not in this sense). (Heard last year, heard again today & looked up again, finally understand better.) |

Comments: | I think this might deserve to be a Priority entry. While it's tough to tell the relative frequency of こまごま versus ほそぼそ as written in kanji without going through stuff manually, "細々" "こまごま" gets a few more hits than "細々" "ほそぼそ". Also, "こまごま" gets 12.9M hits versus 1.2M for "ほそぼそ". Since the news frequency source didn't contain readings, it seems possible that all the hits for 細々/細細 got lumped together and applied as frequency to ほそぼそ, while perhaps both readings should actually be Priority entries. |

|
Comments: | I encountered this as [1](example below). More comments at the main 心気 entry. I think 心気 is clearly its own thing by the ngrams(18376), and by the counts given for 心気くさい(~100), I think this kanji is best hidden under [sK] as a spelling error. sankoku splits the senses [1] and [2]. I sometimes see these entries were very unrelated glosses are sitting next to each other to avoid splitting senses... In the context I saw this was distinctly nothing to do with annoyance or irritation. I'm not sure how to interpret sankoku's dialect notes. Note that they are different for [1] and [2]. The もと in (もと関西方言) suggests to me that this *was* kansai-ben, but is now more generally recognized? Do we note this("formerly kansaiben?") [2] is still recorded as a strictly regional dialect, but is more broad than kansaiben. (関西・中部・中国方言) The use I encountered was by a young, brash, anime warrior-type character, and I know these figures often get "rough" dialects assigned to them, but I'm not an expert on that. Frieren: 俺がこの村に来たとき、みんな辛気くさい顔して、竜の恐怖におびえていた。そんな連中がさ、今で幸せそう笑っているんだよ When I arrived here, all of the villagers wore grim expressions and lived in fear of the dragon. Now those people are smiling happily ==== I swapped kanji ordering purely on the ngrams where the kanji form has a 3-1 lead, though くさい was written in kanji where I encountered it. |

Comments: | Fix definition – this is properly *rattan*, a type of palm (tribe Calameae, in family Arecaceae), not cane, which are grasses in the family Poaceae (indeed different orders). Admittedly, “rattan cane” is loosely referred to as “cane”, esp. in furniture; tried to make this clear. In any case, unambiguous “rattan” should be first, with ambiguous and somewhat incorrect “cane” later. (Read in article.) |

Comments: | This was in the text which I was reading. Context obviously matches. Google hits are good for the various forms. Your [A] link gives the same result. I could have left he RH as "rowing" so that it would be applicable to say "a rowing machine", but the above combination seems to be normal usage so perhaps another entry should be included for "a rowing machine". However, you accceptance of this submission would be the determing factor. Your combined dict also gives the following:- 手こぎボート 【?】 {marit} wherry; WI4 手こぎボト 【?】 rowboat; WI2 "Wherry" does come up in a dictionary, but it seems obscure to me in general context. |

Comments: | The 国際 entry is also tagged as an adj-no, and it's worth noting that Kenkyusha's dictionaries (prog, gg5, chujiten) all avoid giving any actual translation of the word outside its use in compounds/as 国際的 etc. I think an important point is that if ドライビング③ can only ever be used with that meaning in a compound such as ドライビングフォース, is it really a noun by itself? |
|
9. | A* 2018-02-15 21:40:09 Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
Comments: | I don't think the gloss has to match the PoS tag in all cases. It only makes sense to have an adjective gloss for 国際 (a noun), for instance. I'm fine with [adj-f] here though. |
|
8. | A* 2018-02-15 04:39:30 Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
Comments: | The problem is we don't have a suitable *Japanese* POS for it. In this case "driving" is sometimes called a gerundive, not that English really has them. I'd prefer "adj-f". I know driving per se is not a verb, but it is derived from one. |

Comments: | Listed as sense 2 in スーパー大辞林, sense 1 in GG5. GG5 says "archetypal scene [image]", Daijirin "変化する以前の懐しい風景". A common collocation (and also an example in both dictionaries) is 日本の原風景. I use "original scenery; unspoiled landscape", because "archetypal scene" hints at something like a scene from Oedipus rather than 原風景. Both"original scenery" and "unspoiled landscape" are also actually used as translations https://context.reverso.net/translation/japanese-english/原風景 My impression is that sense #2 is actually much more common. Some examples of common collocations from Google Ngrams: 原風景 181888 日本の原風景 52416 日本人の原風景 4109 沖縄の原風景 1979 ふるさとの原風景 1736 田舎の原風景 1050 私の原風景 2266 自分の原風景 797 |

Comments: | Let me try this again. If you search "stock exponential", there are many expressions like "exponential growth of stock price". This is so commonly used that its definition is found in any English dictionary apart from mathematical term. On Japanese side, "株価 加速度的" will find things like "株価の加速度的な上昇". Those two are the most common expression on both language to describe any kind of curb which is more than linear growth. |

Comments: | While mathematically exact translation of exponential is 指数的、in English exponential is used as layman's term to mean "more and more rapidly", which matches 加速度的 in Japanese. |
