Comments: | I won't lose any sleep if it's kept but I'm with Marcus on this one. If every use of a word is accompanied by an explanation of its meaning, it's not a real Japanese word. There are plenty of English language articles that mention 和製英語 terms but you won't find them in an English dictionary unless they're used in English (e.g. salaryman). I think we should apply the same standard here with 英製和語 terms. |

Comments: | How about we leave it here a bit longer, then (probably) drop it as it will have lost relevance. 英製和語 are not that common 8-) |

|
Comments: | 6 years later but I've got to say it's still obvious to me that this shouldn't be an entry. It's demonstrably not a Japanese word -- only an English one. As far as Google can tell us, it was only ever used by English speakers in English in Japan, never in Japanese by Japanese speakers, outside of an extremely limited amount of commenting on said usage by English speakers in Japan. I'm not saying (and wasn't saying) that it couldn't be possible for a reverse 和製英語 (英製和語?) thing to happen where a word minted by foreigners in Japan ends up entering the Japanese language - I'm just saying it clearly didn't happen here. The usage of the word among non-Japanese was merely *discussed* in Japanese. That doesn't mean it was ever *used* in Japanese. |

Comments: | It doesn't necessarily refer to a gangster, but any member of an organization/company/club/group ending with 組, which isn't uncommon among 建設会社 for example. Maybe 2 senses though? jawiki says gang members are called 組員 even if the yakuza organization's name ends with 会 rather than 組. Also often used by itself (or 元組員) to refer to gang members in newspaper headlines etc. |
