merge into 偉才? koj/daij/gg5 do not, but i don't see why. meanings and readings are identical. meikyo does merge. gg5
seems to try to play it as the difference between 'unique genius' and 'remarkable genius', but kokugos don't seem to support any such difference in meaning

The "sometimes" might better be "originally".
As for ん, that's already a headword in 2139720, where sense 3 says "abbr. of particle "no"". So searching for it gets you to the right place. The entry for の is complicated enough already, and we've split 乃/之 to declutter it. I think keeping ん apart too is appropriate.

"Tael" is the English word for the Chinese unit (of weight and currency) 兩 (liǎng).
The Japanese unit of weight 両 (りょう) is essentially the same unit,
so I think it can be glossed "tael".
The Japanese unit of currency is not the same as the Chinese;
it is the value of one unit of weight of gold, while in China it is silver,
so here I think "tael" would not work.

Read today as 無一物 (from a monk) – this is the long form.
本来 is ambiguous (essentially vs. from), and I think both senses are intended, though “essentially *are* nothing” is probably more precise.

I agree with Rene on "(w". The ( serves basically the same function as (). It has no meaning and it's not pronounced. I don't think it should be included here.
However, I agree with Marcus that 笑 should remain as a headword. We lose the わら reading if it's dropped from here. The same applies to w.
I think 笑 should come before w. It must be the more common form overall.
Finally, I wouldn't call this an abbreviation. 笑 and 笑い are used differently.
