Comments: | When this kanji was added to the 常用漢字 the 頰 version was used - it had only recently come available via Unicode. 頬 had been around for years before then. How are we going to handle the 頰 versions, which are still rather rare? I guess we have to make them [rK] and keep them visible. Comments: | when I type からもの, my (standard windows) converter turns it into 唐物 (as one word, pressing space changes both at once) without any problems, but when I type とうぶつ that's not recognized as a single word and I get two separate lines under each kanji (i.e. pressing space changes only one kanji ) and 党物 etc. Reading 唐 as から isn't that uncommon either (唐揚げ etc.), so I don't think it's the case that everybody would automatically assume it's read as とうふつ over からもの. |

Comments: | For sense 1, having put in glosses such as clinking/jingling/etc. I can see no point in explaining what they mean in English. The "expl" is explain what the word means when the short gloss does not. I think jingle/jangle/etc. need nothing further. I can't see sense 2 being other than an example of "clinking" in sense 1. An onomatopoeic term for metal on something hard could be metal-on-metal, metal-on-stone, etc. I don't think we need to be bound by Kojien's literary and historical excursions. Sense 3 - again the "expl" is simply explaining what the English means. I think we should expect the user to know what coquettish/flirty/flighty mean. Sorry if I sound grumpy, but I think as far as possible glosses should stand by themselves, and "expl" should only be used when it is really necessary. The entry is very long already. |

Comments: | * Major re-write * Elab to other senses * There are many possible glosses for “cheap, flirty woman”, but I don’t think they add much; see Wikt for details: http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Wikisaurus:promiscuous_woman * Separate off “metal fittings in setta” as separate sense (following koj) – both daijr and koj cite this usage, so seems useful, and distinct from metal jangling against metal (confusing to try to explain both at once) (Heard on TV today, in sense of nattering) |
