Just to be different, KOD追加語彙 (which is new material to go in the next big Kenkyusha) has: あまご【甘子・雨子】 【魚】 〔サケ科の淡水魚〕 a cherry salmon; Oncorhynchus masou." Are there many different あまごs? Or is everyone just terribly confused? (I am.) I not that there is no Wiki page for 甘子 or あまご. |

Comments: | There's a tool here that attempts to decipher censored text such as う○こ: http://fuseji.net/ Applications such as jisho.org also support regex wildcard searches. For example a search for "う?こ" will bring up all possible matches. IMO, handling these sorts of forms seems outside the scope of jmdict's capabilities. |

Comments: | I don't think "col" is needed. Children's language is colloquial by default. I don't think う○こ should be included. All sorts of words can be censored using ○; I think it's unlikely that users would look up them. Also, ○ isn't kana. It would need to go in the kanji field but having an sK form as the only kanji form on an entry is problematic. |

Comments: | One wit said that lexicographers are divided into "splitters and clumpers". I'm fairly much in the clumper camp, which is probably why JMdict is the way it is. That said, I agree that へ/おなら is a real borderline case, and is a shining example of the messiness of Japanese orthography. If there was a clean usage split between へ and おなら, e.g. one was always polite/clinical and the other was always col/vulg, I'd put them in different senses with comments to indicate usage, but it seems both are used in both applications. On balance I think they should stay in the one entry. |

Comments: | I thought "grace of God" more or less covered covered daijr's sense 2 (where you express gratitude for some situation or result that didn't involve someone else's help or efforts), but on reflection, there's nothing inherently religious about "おかげさまで無事に帰って参りました". I'm not sure what the right approach is here. Probably best to drop the おかげさまで x-ref from the "grace (of God)" sense and instead just treat it as an extra-polite form of the equivalent おかげ sense (as in daijs). |

Comments: | "you have a tendency to cause forks" - that's a quite the unnecessarily hostile overstatement. As is "submission rampage," which I can only read as an implication I'm somehow causing the dictionary more harm than good. I go through the submission list every now and then to check if I've made any mistakes, and sometimes I realize something could be added. I of course aim to do a complete and perfect entry from the start, but in the end, the entries end up more complete precisely because I do give them a second (and third) glance. (though I guess this one is a little overly messy with little time passed between the edits - sorry!) |

Comments: | Please refrain from making four amendments at once, especially when you're going on a submission rampage. Multiple amendments make it very difficult to tell what you've changed and why, you have a tendency to cause forks, and in general it just makes a mess of our approval queue. Comments: | I was speaking to my friend in Japan and was trying to explain the word "suspense", so looked it up. I said this one (kintama ga agattari kudattari), and she started laughing and said it must have been entered as a joke. She told me to look up "kintama" which apparently means "testicle." So, basically this means "testicles up or down" and while that may be how some people express "being held in suspense," I think it is explicit and should be at least marked as such. Please review this entry. |

Comments: | A couple times now, I've run across dialogue in a book where one person says "まさか" and the other person replies "そのまさかだ"... an exchange like "No way!"/"Way!" or "No!"/"Yes!" or "It can't be!"/"It is!". I also found it at the three reference links. I thought of adding an entry for そのまさかだ, but I didn't know how to phrase the meaning... basically it's the opposite of whatever the other person is using まさか for, but I can't figure out how to generalize it. So if you have an idea, and you think it's worth adding an entry, you might do so. |

The questions being asked are sometimes provocative, sometimes meant to provoke laughter - but not "irrelevant" - and in any case meant to elicit witty replies. Comments: | Came for the kanji stats on [rK][sK]. (I am also suspicious about this being [news1] because this is *such* a common name. But it's still a fairly common word, so whatever I suppose...) Can't really compare the bare term because it's a common name. So I looked for some collocations. sankoku gives 並木, daijs gives only 並木. only nikk lists 並樹, which feels like a historic form. Yourei has 50 actual results with 並樹, so it exists. 73 examples of 並み木. 4,338 examples of 並木。 And yourei, if my gut feeling isn't off, seems a bit overrepresented with old text (for copyright reasons I imagine). On twitter, 並み木の下 has ~10 matches in the history of twitter. 樹木の下 actually gets a hit ~every other day. 並木の下 gets ~10 hits/day. Based on the somewhat surprising twitter result, I'd guess I'd lean [rK] for 並樹. Might be being used for "poetic" effect. Should probably be visible in a result if searched for. 並み木 feels like a perfect [sK] candidate. Rare, nonstandard only in furigana, shouldn't be learned, should be searchable... Wouldn't hate it though if 並樹 were also [sK]. Since I am here, also pluralized "roadside trees". sankoku: 通りの両がわに並べて植えた木. I don't think 並ぶ can apply to *one* tree. Actually specifies that both sides of the road must be planted. I think you'd have to contort yourself to point at one roadside tree, and say "that one tree there is a 並木". This ref also had it pluralized: 研究社 新和英中辞典での「並木」の英訳 なみき 並木 a row of trees roadside trees. |

Comments: | Add spelling 品書. Not adding ×志ながき, which I’ve also seen, as I think that’s mostly just one rather noted restaurant (本家尾張屋), as hits seem generally related to that. (I *think* I’ve seen it one other time, but it’s clearly not common. 本家尾張屋 has pretty erratic spelling throughout – ×茹がく(ゆがく) for instance – so I wouldn’t consider it a good authority.) This contrasts with ×志っぽく(しっぽく), which is widespread. |

|
Comments: | There's a sort of logical observation here that I think is correct. を出す is to deliberately do something (see the hinative suggestion that 頑張ろう = 精を出そう). 精が出る is an observation in the moment, or after-the-fact. The dictionary examples are all "to a worker in a field", or some such: 精が出ますね "you sure are doing great work today!" I get the strong impression that this is used as an observation of someone else's performance: "he's really giving it his all today isn't he", "you're really doing exceptional work today", that sort of thing... As such, I don't think the glosses should match 精を出す. You can say 精を出そう, or 精を出すつもり, but there is no way to do this with 精が出る. 精を出すつもり 405 9.5% 精を出そう 3872 90.5% 精が出ますね is potentially an [exp] on its own: 御精が出ますね 66 3.6% ご精が出ますね 324 17.8% 精が出ますね 1435 78.6% This is an interesting one. 精が出ない 246 100.0% 粋を出さない 0 0.0% 精が出ない: (a commentary on their own condition) https://ameblo.jp/spiral-jump/entry-12572684621.html This is a bit like 元気が出る、元気が出ない. This might be a legitimate construction(both halves exist, but I made this up): 精を出そうとしても、精が出なかった。 Certainly the negation is a bit more nuanced than "wasn't working hard". More like "couldn't do my best", "didn't have the willpower to focus on work". hmm |

For the next generation of JMDict, I'd like to see search-only forms handled separately (i.e. in a different part of the XML). Then we can at least consider ideas like this. And I agree with Marcus regarding the n-grams. The fact that both 前門の虎 and 後門の狼 have nearly identical counts suggests that they're almost always used together. Online search results appear to confirm this. |

Comments: | I'm not sure we should be using sK for things like this? Feels like we could be opening up a can of worms here. The reason the individual parts get more hits in the ngrams is frequently a problem with the searchability of the ngrams rather than real evidence the individual parts are frequent on their own. |
