Comments: | (A) Re 電子探知器, I amended your proposed entry for two reasons: (1) the concept of "electron detector" is a little odd outside contexts such as beta-particle detection, and (2) several references made it clear that it was usually translated as "electronic" (which is how 電子 often is as a prefix.) (B) "ELECTRONIC CONTROL BRAKE SYSTEM" sounds very 直訳 to me. I just checked it with Google - 33 unique hits, mostly from non-English WWW sites or documents. That low score and document sourcing are signals to me to stay right away from it. |

|
Comments: | I have not made any changes to the above. I just wanted to comment about an apparent oddity. When I made the submission on "電子探知器", I thought about meaning in the context of the various entries. In the end, I thought that, in the text which I was reading, the equipment was seeking to detect electrons in space. Upon seeing your correction back to "electronic locator", I can see that you have opted for "電子" as a description of the equipment; as opposed to what the equipment is doing. In checking out other similar entries, I can see the consistency associated with that. However, when one has the smoke detector or metal detector, we are just dealing with a dector which senses smoke or metal, as opposed to a detector which is itself in some way made of smoke or metal. Accepting that idiom and oddities are created in English as well as Japanese, I will guided by your entries. My reason for this submission is that on checking around, I came across the main entry above. The thing which occurred to me was that in the modern age of the internet many things just circulate around and, in the end, they seem to reflect consenus; whereas they may only be derived from one source. When I searched for the main entry above on Google, Weblio gave the first meaning based, as stated, upon your dictionary. In addition, it gave another meaning which was: "ELECTRONIC CONTROL BRAKE SYSTEM". Maybe, idiom goes for your meaning; and the "ELECTRONIC CONTROL BRAKE SYSTEM" is just simply a word for word translation. However, would it be good to include the word for word translation as well as the main entries above or is the word for word missing the point. I don't state that as my idea, I state it because the meaning comes up on the Google search. Sorry to bore you with background thoughts. |
