Comments: | What opencooper was saying is that "isekai" in English doesn't refer to the actual "other world" as much as it refers to the genre of works that take place in them. I don't think adding "(genre)" is helpful because I don't think it's clear that it should be read as "this English gloss mainly applies to the genre dealing with works taking place in another world" but will instead be interpreted as "異世界 refers to a genre". I'm sure opencooper is correct but I'm assuming "isekai" can have both meanings in English i.e. 1) genre dealing w 異世界, 2) 異世界, and since it's at the bottom of the list, I think this entry is probably fine as-is. |

Comments: | Naturally, I would like to see this included. The form without the "か" is included, e.g., 一日二日 【いちにちふつか】 (n,adv) a day or two On the basis of the a + b reasoning, this entry should be deleted. However, when trying to be clear about the correct reading, why not "ついたちかふつか"? Well if one searches for "一日" one gets:- 一日(P); 朔日; 朔 【ついたち(P); さくじつ(朔日); いっぴ(一日)】 (n) (1) (usu. 一日) first day of the month; (2) (ついたち only) (arch) first ten days of the lunar month; (P) Thus, "ついたち" cannot be correct, but wait, there is another entry for "一日", namely:- 一日(P); 1日 【いちにち(P); いちじつ; ひとひ(ok); ひとえ(ok)】 (n) (1) first day of the month; (2) (See ついたち) one day; (P) Are yes, we now have another choice of reading, namely: "いちじつ", but we see that in this case "いちにち(P); いちじつ" means "(1) first day of the month" and there is a link which indicates a meaning of "one day", but as stated above when we go to that link we discover that it is not "one day". Maybe the "ついたち link" should be with the "(1)" meaning and not the "(2)" meaning. Maybe, the novice would like some help with readings, even though a + b of the kanji give the clue. Perhaps the entry for "一日二日 【いちにちふつか】 (n,adv) a day or two" could be expanded to include this submission as an alternative. |
|
2. | A* 2012-03-18 02:01:46 Rene Malenfant <...address hidden...> | |
Comments: | I agree. I think the a+b approach should be taken here, i.e., this need not be an entry. |

Refs: | See below. |

Comments: | Google gives a good range of hits and the reading above. For the novice, the reading would remove doubts. However, the a + b approach would probably give a reasonable understanding. |

Comments: | Hi René, sorry if you feel I haven't followed the guidelines completely, I've really tried my best to. Looking at the search results, I do not see any "reliable sources" with the マレー山猫 spelling, and there are actually only 4 different hits in total, all from personal blogs (amazon and inside games are empty pages, and one other is a duplicate). In such cases, I assumed it makes sense not to include the kanji reading (as it's really no better than a guess), no matter how obvious it is. If you can illuminate what the best practice is, I can go through my unapproved entries for animals that could have kanji readings and add them, where it's appropriate? |

Comments: | Came here after editing 長寿. Never heard "long runner" in my life, and when I google it I get carpets. You may have other intuitions if you want to restore it, but "long-running" seems quite common and fitting to me. You can google "long-lived program" vs "long-running program". Or: "long-lived television program" (10 hits) "long-running television program" (11,000 googits). The bare "long-lived program" results seem to suggest it's more common for long-lived university research programs, which wouldn't apply here. And it's comparatively rare anyway. |

Comments: | For the record, I note that there are the following entries:- キャンバス地テント 【きゃんばすちてんと】 (n) canvas tent; canvas; canvass; JWN-02954163-n キャンバス地のシート 【?】 canvas sheet; WI4 キャンバス地のハンドバッグ 【?】 canvas handbag; WI4 キャンバス地のリュック 【?】 canvas pack; WI4 My point is that "キャンバス地" is, on its own, the "groundsheet" in English. We also could say "lay the sheet which is the groundsheet" or things like, "this sheet is called the groundsheet", etc.. |

Comments: | In the text which I was reading the topic was erecting a tent. The first task was to lay the "キャンバス地のシート". I guess that a literal meaning would be "sheet belonging to ground canvass", but the canvass sheet which goes on the ground in a tent is called a "ground sheet"; at least in the tents which I have had. |
