Comments: | Hi René, sorry if you feel I haven't followed the guidelines completely, I've really tried my best to. Looking at the search results, I do not see any "reliable sources" with the マレー山猫 spelling, and there are actually only 4 different hits in total, all from personal blogs (amazon and inside games are empty pages, and one other is a duplicate). In such cases, I assumed it makes sense not to include the kanji reading (as it's really no better than a guess), no matter how obvious it is. If you can illuminate what the best practice is, I can go through my unapproved entries for animals that could have kanji readings and add them, where it's appropriate? |

Refs: | * The term with sense 1 (and reading ふなぞこ) appears in a text i am translating, where an item called 淦取り(a kind of wooden scoop) is defined as follows: 舟底に溜まった海水をくみ出すためのもの。機能的な形をしている。 * a reference on the web (with the same xref): http://kanji.reader.bz/舟底 * The term with sense 2 (and reading ふなぞこ) appears on this page: http://www.lares.dti.ne.jp/bunraku/mystery/tesuri/index.html |

Comments: | And a hint for ENAMDIC: The same kanji combination is also used as 人名 name (with reading "Funasoko") and as 地名 (reading unknown to me) |

Comments: | This could look like a tricky issue, since 諸島 and 列島 are used both as generic terms and as parts of names; but all the English translations of texts about our area that i have seen use terms like "Yaeyama Islands" or "Yaeyama (Island) Group" and not "Yaeyamashotou" or "Yaeyamarettou"... and i also tend to hink that, since JEDIC is meant to help make Japanese texts intelligible to people who can't otherwise read them, most users (who, unless they live near the sea, may not know this kind of 専門用語) are better served with the translated terms. :-) And a side note about 諸島 vs. 列島: Some related information concerning the difficulty (impossibility) of providing context-appropriate definitions in a general language dictionary can be gleaned from these pages: http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/琉球諸島 http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/南西諸島 http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/八重山列島 |

Comments: | Adding this as a separate entry since I think adding the ねこま reading to the 猫 entry would be unnecessarily confusing. But if readings could be tagged as archaic, I think it should be merged. |
