Comments: | I think Nils' 2012 addition is based on a subset of a GG5 sense. 中辞典 has it as a separate sense. This proposal is based on the spread of senses in the references. There are 17 Tanaka sentences which seem to cover only the first two senses. |

Comments: | Add spelling 妻楊枝 – saw on chopsticks today. Marked as [iK] b/c: * it’s not in any dictionary I checked, and * seems an obvious corruption/misspelling (つま being an unfamiliar reading for 爪, which is usually つめ, and 妻 is the only familiar character with reading つま; etymology is obviously 爪 = nail, pick, not 妻 = wife) * also, 妻楊枝 is *much* less frequent FWIW, the (Japanese) shop-owner averred that he’d never noticed, and thought 妻楊枝 was the usual spelling, so this seems an easily missed point. |

Comments: | Add archaic spellings. Talismans with 「火迺要慎」 on them are ubiquitous in Kyoto (people often simplify this to 廼 online); these are from Atago shrine. The spelling is also used more broadly (as in the T-shirt noted above). You can guess the reading from context, if you’re already familiar with 火の用心 and readings for 要 and 慎, but it’s *really* confusing (and 迺 is really baffling), so it seems worth including. |

I thought I saw a 科 entry where Rene had removed the "X-id" gloss giving an explanation like that but I couldn't find it looking through entries ending in 科 now, so it might have been a different kind of entry. But if "mustelids" is accepted here, shouldn't ideally each 科 entry have an -"id" gloss as well? |

Comments: | Hi René, sorry if you feel I haven't followed the guidelines completely, I've really tried my best to. Looking at the search results, I do not see any "reliable sources" with the マレー山猫 spelling, and there are actually only 4 different hits in total, all from personal blogs (amazon and inside games are empty pages, and one other is a duplicate). In such cases, I assumed it makes sense not to include the kanji reading (as it's really no better than a guess), no matter how obvious it is. If you can illuminate what the best practice is, I can go through my unapproved entries for animals that could have kanji readings and add them, where it's appropriate? |

Comments: | Came here after editing 長寿. Never heard "long runner" in my life, and when I google it I get carpets. You may have other intuitions if you want to restore it, but "long-running" seems quite common and fitting to me. You can google "long-lived program" vs "long-running program". Or: "long-lived television program" (10 hits) "long-running television program" (11,000 googits). The bare "long-lived program" results seem to suggest it's more common for long-lived university research programs, which wouldn't apply here. And it's comparatively rare anyway. |
