Instead of merging and adding restr tags or "esp." notes, it's probably best to drop the general "flag" sense from this entry. |

2. | A* 2012-03-18 01:58:54 Rene Malenfant <...address hidden...> | |
Comments: | I don't think this is entry necessary. We have a general policy against お-noun entries unless there is a dictionary reference for them (and in this case there is none). It's an obvious derived form in Japanese and no different than saying "Silence!" in English. |

Comments: | Often this is followed by "なさい" and picks up the meaning of "Shut up!". Even without "なさい" it seems to have much the same meaning, as far as I can tell from context and searching around. It picks up quite a good measure of Google hit and I think you may wish to include it. If one follows the a + b concept, one may think that it is a polite way of seeking silence from someone for good reason where there is a need to interrupt a flow of speech. I guess that if my searching is right, then the a + b concept would be wrong. |

Comments: | Naturally, I would like to see this included. The form without the "か" is included, e.g., 一日二日 【いちにちふつか】 (n,adv) a day or two On the basis of the a + b reasoning, this entry should be deleted. However, when trying to be clear about the correct reading, why not "ついたちかふつか"? Well if one searches for "一日" one gets:- 一日(P); 朔日; 朔 【ついたち(P); さくじつ(朔日); いっぴ(一日)】 (n) (1) (usu. 一日) first day of the month; (2) (ついたち only) (arch) first ten days of the lunar month; (P) Thus, "ついたち" cannot be correct, but wait, there is another entry for "一日", namely:- 一日(P); 1日 【いちにち(P); いちじつ; ひとひ(ok); ひとえ(ok)】 (n) (1) first day of the month; (2) (See ついたち) one day; (P) Are yes, we now have another choice of reading, namely: "いちじつ", but we see that in this case "いちにち(P); いちじつ" means "(1) first day of the month" and there is a link which indicates a meaning of "one day", but as stated above when we go to that link we discover that it is not "one day". Maybe the "ついたち link" should be with the "(1)" meaning and not the "(2)" meaning. Maybe, the novice would like some help with readings, even though a + b of the kanji give the clue. Perhaps the entry for "一日二日 【いちにちふつか】 (n,adv) a day or two" could be expanded to include this submission as an alternative. |

Refs: | See below. |
|
Comments: | Google gives a good range of hits and the reading above. For the novice, the reading would remove doubts. However, the a + b approach would probably give a reasonable understanding. |

Comments: | Saw on pickles today as ひの菜 Scientific name looks right (based on English reference; some ) Proposed English name “Japanese long-rooted pickling turnip” (based on suggestions at English reference) makes definition v. clear (these are a Japanese variety of long turnips, primarily used for pickling). Notably, usually hiragana (though kanji not uncommon), but very rarely katakana. |
