Refs: | GG5: 競争(倍)率 a competition rate; a ratio of successful (applicants) to total applicants. - 競争率 20 倍の狭き門 a forbidding acceptance rate of one in twenty applicants. 中辞典: 競争率 the ratio of successful (applicants) to total applicants; the competition rate ルミナス: success rate ログレッシブ: the competitive rate - 競争率は2.5倍だ Only 40 percent of the applicants will be accepted./There are 2.5 applicants for each opening. |
|
Comments: | This all seems very strange. GG5's definition and example seem to contradict, but I think the inconsistency is coming from the 倍, which normally means "times" or "fold" when it follows a number, but then you get cases where its a fraction (GG5 examples): - 40倍の石炭酸水 a 1 in 40 carbolic solution - 3,000倍の硝酸銀溶液 a 「1/3000 [1 to 3000] silver nitrate solution. which is the pattern in the ログレッシブ example. I'll put back the previous version and add the other JE translations, and leave it open for further discussion. |

Comments: | Hi. As I understand it, 競争率が高い means that competition is strong. I can't reconcile this with the definition given, "ratio of successful (applicants) to total applicants". If this ratio is high, then surely the competition is *not* very strong? |
