Comments: | Not sure the best way to word this. Google ペンタブ 手ブレ補正 for examples of this usage. It probably also applies to mouse and finger input systems. The usage patterns for the two definitions seem slightly different and there isn't really a direct bridge between them, so I'm hesitant to merge them into a single "stabilization" definition (which would also be vague and misleading). It miiiight be helpful to add a second definition to 手ブレ too*, but it's probably not necessary, as using this definition for it on its own is a lot less common than this compound. Rather than adding a second definition to 手ブレ it might be a good idea to make 手ブレ's definition more broad instead. * see phrasing like 「手ブレ補正とは、>>手ぶれ<<による細かな線の揺れを自動的に軽減してくれる機能。」 as seen in clip studio paint's documentation (chevrons mine) |

Comments: | * Marked as [int] (rather than [adv]) – seems more used as interjection than as adverb. Heard somewhere (迷惑メール?), gets a huge number of hits. Note the “sexy” use, just as in English. I got a *lot* of dog hits and was very confused (they didn’t look esp. fast) until I figured out that it was “shaking off water” (pictures helped). In this latter sense, dunno if it could be said to be related to ぶるぶる (shivering). It’s also seems a relatively common nickname for bulldogs (from ブル), AFAICT, but that’s pushing it. |

Seems it's the same one. |

Comments: | Thanks for that response. I agree entirely with the concept, but many of the sample sentences are far too long and complex; and the novice [and many who are not quite novices] has to cope with grasping a whole translation which requires carefully matching with the Japanese wording. Perhaps, the sentences which are used for the intended purpose of helping to explain the [so called] obvious could be very brief, namely: in this particular case, something no more than "かれはことを気づく [He discovers a thing]". Rather, than the more usual which may be: "His dear friend discovered that his that his wife was sobbing in the kitchen, and he was very concerned about that.". Perhaps a little overstated by me, but I guess that you know what I mean. I am, of course, not suggesting that the more detailed sentences should be excluded, but I am suggesting that there should always be a very simple sentence with the absolute minimum which is needed in order to explain the main point of the related entry in the dictionary. |

Comments: | Comments noted and appreciated. I think the best way to address these issues is via good examples. Putting them into the Tatoeba collection and linking them is probably most appropriate. |

Comments: | Whilst I agree with the concept of not turning a dictionary into predominantly a grammar book, when it comes to Japanese it seems to me that it is not quite the same as other languages which are based upon a simple word by word structure with idiomatic meanings distorting the plain A + B concept. Of course, one must not go to extremes, but a fair smattering of the obvious would not be a bad thing for the novice searcher. However, I can see that it would be anathema to the scholar to see a dictionary riddled with too much of the obvious. It is always a balance which has to be struck. However, one does have the great advantage of an electronic dictionary in so far that one is not limited by printed pages and book size. Because of that, I feel that one should take full advantage of that fact and be flexible in the criteria. If one simply keeps to plain criteria for the concept of dictionary, once one has dealt with the ordinary words and idiom, one is simply left with expanding with the uncommon and the obscure; where probably 95% of it is of little interest to the average searcher. However, in this dictionary, I come across so many ordinary expressions which are already included that I was encouraged to submit the above. As for me, I would be just as happy for your other two examples of eating and drinking to be included as well. The searcher would then get a good "taste" of the difference between idiom and ordinary A + B. That “taste” would allow the searcher to make better judgement about the mass of things, which as you say cannot reasonably be included; not as a result of space restriction, but because of the use of the valuable time of the dedicated team of workers. Anyway, as always, many thanks for your valuable comments on my submissions. That is one aspect which makes this site so helpful; because one can feel the human input. |

Comments: | All of the phrases you've cited (except for 〜を成し遂げる, which I've just recommended be deleted) are idiomatic. ことを気づく is just the sum of its parts; it's really no more than the meaning of 気づく alone. If this were to be added, just about any ことを+verb combo would fit the bill, as would things like ものを食べる, ものを飲む, etc. This shouldn't be an entry. |
