Comments: | Many thanks for the explanation. I am often wondering whether or not I should make a submission. Sometimes, it is clear from the combination of the kanji what is intended, but not so clear as to what the reading should be. Often, I find that one of the greatest values of your site is that one can get confirmation of the readings and proceed with one's work in the comfort of knowing that. This is especially so with more than two kanji, e.g., "運転手". As for me, the greater number of such entries, whether 2, 3 or more kanji, which show the readings is extremely valuable, but I do understand that there has to be a limit placed somewhere. Again many thanks. |

Comments: | There are several tests I apply when considering this sort of expression for inclusion: 1. is its meaning not obvious from the component parts (in this case it is obvious - it's how I'd translate it, WWWJDIC's text glosser explains it as 遠い + 旅, etc.) 2. is it not what you'd come up with when trying to say the English expression in Japanese (in this case it's exactly what I'd say for "distant journey".) 3. is it already in one or more dictionaries (no, it's in none apart from Eijiro. Everything is in Eijiro.) 4. is it very, very common, with squillions of hits. (No, it get 140k, which is about what I'd expect.) This is a rather weak test, and mainly used with idiomatic expressions. Since it fails all the tests above, I'm inclined not to include it. If you were asking about 遠い国, it *might* be different, as it gets 1.4M hits, but even then I don't think it's worth it. |

Comments: | This gets some 140k Google hits. Maybe you will consider promotion because of the close association between the two factors. I appreciate that one can get distant + many things, but there is a ring of completeness in this expression. |
