The text which I was reading uses the added reading above and Google hits show 400+k for the search.

When I searched your site for confirmation, as you would know, I did not get any result.

As a matter of interest, your caution on the submission page highlighted the existing entry and so I did not proceed with my previous submission and waste your time. However, it is often the case that my searches fail for the same reason and I wonder if something can be done about that in order to save picking them [different readings] off one-by-one.

Fix wording:
* not hay (this is animal feed; this is thatching material)
* specifically grasses and sedges
* reword technical definition (Poaceae (Gramineae) = grasses, Cyperaceae = sedges)
The “various gramineous grasses (e.g. eularies)” gloss doesn’t seem very helpful (it’s technical, “gramineous” is more confusing than “Gramineae”, which is generally called Poaceae nowadays, AFAICT, and I have no idea what eularies is – presumably a genus? – we’re the main web reference for that word).

I don't think the first part ("medicine and one's daily diet are equally important for a healthy body")is correct.
The Wiki article says that 医食同源 means
日頃からバランスの取れた美味しい食事をとることで病気を予防し、治療しようとする考え方。
http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/医食同源
There's nothing about medicine being important there.
On the contrary, 医食同源 is used to describe Sagen Ishizuka's approach to healing. He was renowned for healing by "prescribing
a simple change of diet" rather than medicine. The Wiki article on Ishizuka says
栄養学がまだ学問として確立されていない時代に食物と心身の関係を理論にし、医食同源としての食養を提唱する。
.
The third part of the existing definition says "medicine and food have the same origin".
That may be a literal interpretation of the characters, but it's not what the expression actually means.
It seems to be saying that "food and medicine are both derived from plant and animal sources", which is not really the point.
.
Kojien's definition of 医食同源 makes the point that food and medicine are essentially the same thing -- not that they have the
same origin.
Kojien: 病気を治すのも食事をするのも、生命を養い健康を保つためで、その本質は同じだということ。
.
The Japanese expression 医食同源 was derived from the Chinese saying 藥食同源:
「医食同源」という言葉自体は中国の薬食同源思想から着想を得て、近年、日本で造語された。[Wiki article quoted above.]
Here is an extract from a magazine article which explains the meaning of the Chinese saying 藥食同源:
是傳統中國醫學的特色,主張由自然食物進行身體的修補工作
"This is the special viewpoint of traditional Chinese medical theory. It places an emphasis upon using natural foodstuffs to
undertake the work of fortifying the body."

Maybe that is the way to deal with it, but I was uncertain about the context of doubt [“what”] being associated with “なのだ” [in “なのだ; なんだ; なのです; なんです (aux) it is assuredly that ...; can say with confidence that”] and I also wondered if “なんだ” should even be included there. That was why I was wondering about the missing “い” which would give the “んだ” [explaining] “知らない [I don't know]. If the “(aux)なんだ” could also be short for “…なかった”, then it makes a lot of endings very uncertain as to meaning. One further point in the context of the text which I was reading is that the speaker of the dialogue constantly also leaves out the “い” in “いる” when it follows “-て”. However, I shall read-on looking more closely at text and context in order to see if I can confirm the Wiki comment in the author's usage of “知らなんだ”.
The other entry of “なんだ; なあんだ 《何だ》 (int) (uk) What!” does, of course, make total sense.

Many thanks for the feedback on my submission. It is always appreciated as I slowly travel the road of trying to understand.
2. A* 2012-02-13 10:11:52  Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
That なんだ is a common (Kansai?) variant of …なかった. See the Wiki page http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/新方言 where it explains it thus:
    西日本に多い否定の助動詞「ん」の過去表現は本来「…なんだ」であるが「ん」と共通語「…なかった」が交じり合って「…んかった」という形が生まれ、「…なんだ」に取って代わりつつある。
    (例)知らなんだ→知らんかった
I don't think this should be an entry. Perhaps the current entry for なんだ could have a second sense?

This picks up 1.4m Google hits. It comes up in a sample sentence on your site, i.e.,

あらまあ、ホント、全く知らなんだ。 Oh my, you're right, I didn't know that at all.[Amend] ,

but I cannot get the confirmation of the usage; unless the missing "い" is possible in this situation. If that were the case then with such high usage, it may be helpful to have an entry with a cross-reference to "知らない". in order to remove the doubt which may exist in the mind of the searcher. If there is another reason for the usage, then even more helpful to have that on your site.

I can find a few real hits but I really doubt it's an established term, unlike 自家醸造.
5. D* 2023-08-27 18:17:51  Brian Krznarich <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
I don't inherently object to [rare] entries, but the "fix" to this one is an xref to 自家醸造, which kind of highlights that maybe this shouldn't be here in the first place...

This was added in 2012 with "Lots of results on google"(I suspect from 自家醸造). This was later downgraded to [rare], with a comment about "300 hits" (where?)

Is there an actual kokugo ref for this? Not on kotobank.

Searching for "自家醸", 自家醸造 is all I get (which we also have, and is quite common).

ngrams
自家醸	No matches
自家醸造	6710

"自家醸した" *4* google hits, all automatic conjugations of *this* entry.
"自家醸した" *4* hits on google books.
"自家醸する" zero hits on google books, same automatic hits on google proper (machine conjugation)
"自家醸の" two? real hits on google. A few google books results (自家醸の酒).

If seen in the wild, it is as likely a mistake as anything else (or a creative flight of fancy, I don't know). If someone searched for 自家醸 here, they'll get the entry for 自家醸造 in any case. If there is no kokugo support, I don't think we generally catalogue "mistakes" or rare neologisms.

And this term would be self-evident as A+B in any case.

I'm sorry, but I think you are wrong here.

The reason you don't use the word "summer tyre" in Australia is most likely less of a "linguistic feature" and more the result of
lacking the type of weather that requires winter/snow tires? The word is obviously used in the UK.

I heard this used on the news here in Japan. The screen showed the scene of an accident (because of the recent snow in Kanto) and there
was a zoom-up on the tyres, and on the screen the テロップ appeared: "ノーマルタイヤ". In a context like this, I don't think any
English-language news show would have used the word "NORMAL TIRES" over "SUMMER TIRES", not even in Australia ;).
Doing "news google" searches for "normal tire(s)" vs "summer tire(s)" is illuminating.
For "normal tire", the hits (220) are things "... while still allowing for normal tire wear ...", "Sensor memorization after normal tire
rotation ...", ""In just a normal tire, it could've very easily caused a blowout," etc., cf. with "summer tire" (2000)

Redoing my edit which was rejected without addressing the points I raised, by Rene. Yes, I forked the entry, sorry, but last time Robin
forked an entry after my edit, my earlier edit was also rejected with a "forked" comment (if it was by Jim or Rene, I don't remember). It
might not have been done on purpose but it's still kind of telling. All hierarchical systems have issues where the status of the
individuals participating in it weigh heavier than whether or not they are actually right. I've noticed Rene for example often approving
obviously incorrect or questionable edits made by Jim (where I'm sure Rene were aware that the edit was at least questionable). I have a
great amount of respect for Jim for creating the dictionary and spending the time he has on it, but he's not without fault (nor does he
pretend to be!). The best thing for the dictionary itself is for it to be correct, not that the edit made by the most senior gets a pat on
the back.

My initial amendment comment follows:

I don't know who wrote the altered entry, but "tama ire"
would normally be an abstract, like a gerund, so "inserter"
is a bit wrong. Note also that the word means "pachinko", so
if the term does need to be translated, it might be
something like "the Korean ball-shooting game" or "Korean
ball-shooting". "Zainichi Korean" doesn't mean "Korean
nationals", it means people who live in Japan but have
Korean nationality. Anyway I think the entry was OK as I
entered it, and the edited entry not so good. Hope this
helps.

  Comments:
I agree with the reality of that, but because one cannot realistically have an entry for every verb+ きれない, it does not mean that one cannot have an entry for the most predominantly used verbs+ きれない. Indeed, that does happen on the site. From the novice's point of view, there are two problems: (i) the question of searching [if one sees “隠しきれない” and searches for a meaning on the site, nothing comes up]; and (ii) if one realises one can search for “きれない” one gets the current entry, but it is a further step to add that description to “隠す” and get to the nuance intended. Of course, again I accept that once one has understood that coupling, then every verb+ きれない makes sense in context. If for practical purposes, you are opposed to gradually including entries for the predominantly used verbs+ きれない, then I wonder if you could expand the description of “きれない” by showing a few examples of predominantly used verbs+ きれない with the specific description for the combination. Finally, although the added sample sentences do help, it is often the case that picking out the specific description for the particular verb is not always as clear as the novice would need to understand.

Anyway, many thanks for giving this matter your consideration, which has prompted me to make this additional comment. As for me, personally, I have crossed the hurdle on this particular aspect so it is only your other users of the dictionary which are in focus; and I must accept that you have the experience and also that you must have the last word on these issues.
7. A* 2012-02-19 08:57:06  Rene Malenfant <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
We can't have an entry for every_verb+きれない. This is the reason that we have entries for suffixes. I don't see a reason to single out 隠しきれない for inclusion.

  Comments:
I cannot help but agree to the observations about simplicity of the structure. However, the real issue is whether the simplicity of the structure, in the mind of the person who needs a dictionary, results in the understanding of the nuance intended by the user of the expression. Indeed, as with any language, the native speakers in general would understand the nuance of such expressions without even necessarily understanding the simplicity of the structure of the language. I may add, by way of compliment, that your dictionary demonstrates quite ably many examples where the true nuance of an expression could not have been understood by a novice who simply added A+B together.
