Comments: | I think it’s clearer if でんでんむし is a separate entry (see comments there – it’s unrelated etymologically, it's a mess to include でんでん虫 spelling, and it’s [col], which we can’t tag if it’s just a reading, not an entry). OTOH, I think it’s fine to include かたつむり and かぎゅう in the same entry (it’s usual practice to include on'yomi). |

"あ、手を振り返してくれてる" "手を振り返してほしい" |
|
Comments: | We already have ぶり返す as a separate entry. Nikk alone does have 振り返す as both ふりかえす and ぶりかえす. Daij koj have ぶりかえす as ぶり返す only and don't have ふりかえす as an entry at all. My Windows IME does not bring up "振り返す" for the input ぶりかえす at all, though it does for ふりかえす (2nd option, after 振替す). ふりかえす with the meaning attested in nikk is likely archaic and the only current meaning of this word is "to wave back", which explains the high ngram count. I suggest this entry is deleted to avoid confusion, or changed to "to wave back" (though it's a little A+B) |

Comments: | I'm just writing a comment because I'm not sure, but shouldn't be the reading ぶりかえす instead? Both weblio and kotobank gives me that reading (actually kotobank redirects me to ぶり返す). In addition weblio has a ふりかえす entry, but it should be something like "wave back" and "look back". https://www.weblio.jp/content/振り返す https://kotobank.jp/word/ぶり返す-621334 |

Comments: | In the context of the text which I was reading, the meaning was basically "(the family in) the house at night". I checked your site for confirmation, but could not find anything so I did some searching. It picks up a lot of hits on Google, but quite a few of them were separating the two kanji; although they followed each other. The reading was also picked up on Google. There are a few examples in your [A] reference, but no readings. Anyway, I hope that is useful. |

Comments: | Maybe that is the way to deal with it, but I was uncertain about the context of doubt [“what”] being associated with “なのだ” [in “なのだ; なんだ; なのです; なんです (aux) it is assuredly that ...; can say with confidence that”] and I also wondered if “なんだ” should even be included there. That was why I was wondering about the missing “い” which would give the “んだ” [explaining] “知らない [I don't know]. If the “(aux)なんだ” could also be short for “…なかった”, then it makes a lot of endings very uncertain as to meaning. One further point in the context of the text which I was reading is that the speaker of the dialogue constantly also leaves out the “い” in “いる” when it follows “-て”. However, I shall read-on looking more closely at text and context in order to see if I can confirm the Wiki comment in the author's usage of “知らなんだ”. The other entry of “なんだ; なあんだ 《何だ》 (int) (uk) What!” does, of course, make total sense. Many thanks for the feedback on my submission. It is always appreciated as I slowly travel the road of trying to understand. |
|
2. | A* 2012-02-13 10:11:52 Jim Breen <...address hidden...> | |
Comments: | That なんだ is a common (Kansai?) variant of …なかった. See the Wiki page http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/新方言 where it explains it thus: 西日本に多い否定の助動詞「ん」の過去表現は本来「…なんだ」であるが「ん」と共通語「…なかった」が交じり合って「…んかった」という形が生まれ、「…なんだ」に取って代わりつつある。 (例)知らなんだ→知らんかった I don't think this should be an entry. Perhaps the current entry for なんだ could have a second sense? |

Comments: | This picks up 1.4m Google hits. It comes up in a sample sentence on your site, i.e., あらまあ、ホント、全く知らなんだ。 Oh my, you're right, I didn't know that at all.[Amend] , but I cannot get the confirmation of the usage; unless the missing "い" is possible in this situation. If that were the case then with such high usage, it may be helpful to have an entry with a cross-reference to "知らない". in order to remove the doubt which may exist in the mind of the searcher. If there is another reason for the usage, then even more helpful to have that on your site. |

Comments: | Read in book for class 『日本語上級読解』 (as before), referring to withered grass in a field in January. Book glosses it 「すっかり枯れてしまった」 (completely withered), but dictionaries all state “*starting* to wither (as winter approaches)”, or “in the process of withering” instead, so that’s what I’ve put. Given apparent etymology (す+枯れる), it might mean “at either end of withering – starting to wither (dicts), completely withered (book)“, but this is pure speculation. Comments: | See 1572070, where I have added でんでん虫. I think it is far messier to split these into two entries than to combine them. If this one goes in we'll have two entries having the 蝸牛/でんでんむし/snail combination. Also, 蝸牛 is not 当て字. In JMdict we distinguish between true 当て字 where kanji are used for their phonemes, e.g. 阿弗利加, and 義訓 such as 舎人/とねり and 啄木鳥/けら where a 和語 reading is used based on meaning alone. 蝸牛/でんでんむし is one of the latter. (Many Japanese people these days call both categores "当て字", but that is not strictly correct. See the 広辞苑 and 大辞林 entries for 当て字.) I propose to reject this submission. |

Comments: | I think it’s clearer and more accurate to have でんでんむし separate from かたつむり and かぎゅう (蝸牛) – it’s an etymologically unrelated synonym that shares an (ateji) spelling (蝸牛). It gets particularly messy if we want to include the spelling でんでん虫 (which is common – 720,000 hits), as we get various restrictions. Further, can’t tag a *reading* as [col], and でんでんむし is more colloquial (I’ve been told “childish”, like “kitty-cat”) than かたつむり, which is a standard word. |
