Refs: | http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/鹿肉 (Gives only しかにく as a reading) |
|
Comments: | * Remove しかにく reading + restriction – there’s already a separate 鹿肉(しかにく) entry. * Add a [see] link instead This is messy situation, because there are two readings (かのしし、しかにく), two spellings (鹿、鹿肉), and two meanings (deer, deer meat) (hence 8 possible combinations), and they don’t line up in a simple way. The current situation is wrong: * firstly b/c it has (鹿肉/しかにく/deer meat) in two places (this entry and a separate entry with just that), * secondly b/c I don’t think 鹿 (by itself) is read as しかにく (so it’s missing a restriction) The options are either: * One consolidated entry – delete the (鹿肉/しかにく/deer meat) entry, add a restriction so しかにく is restricted to 鹿肉 * Two separate entries – a かのしし entry (2 spellings, 2 meanings) and a しかにく entry (1 spelling, 1 meaning), and no restrictions I think it’s clearer with two separate entries (hence why I’m suggesting that): * 鹿肉/しかにく/deer meat is a easy word, and what you would expect when seeing it (admittedly, 湯桶読み), so it should have a clear entry (for usability). * かのしし seems really old-fashioned or dialectical * There is a shared 鹿肉/?/deer meat sense, which is the root of the issues – a link relates these simply It’s clear enough if these are separate, but gets really messy if one tries to put them together. Do this sound sane? |

Comments: | The actual text was this: "、夜家にいるのは...." This led me to make the search. As you say, the Google entries generally show the separation of the kanji. Your second example is similar to the text which I was reading. It was when I picked up the reading of "よいえ" that I thought a submission may be useful. |
|
2. | A* 2012-02-13 09:52:21 Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
Comments: | I do not believe this is a word or expression. It is just a collocation of two single-kanji words. For example, in Eijiro there is: 今夜家に帰るのが待ちきれない - clearly 今夜 then 家 少し休めば、今夜家に帰れるでしょう - ditto 携帯電話はプリペード式、夜家に電話がかかってもとらない時もある - 夜 then 家 Every WWW occurrence I looked at was either a false positive, a place name, or this sort of usage. |

Comments: | In the context of the text which I was reading, the meaning was basically "(the family in) the house at night". I checked your site for confirmation, but could not find anything so I did some searching. It picks up a lot of hits on Google, but quite a few of them were separating the two kanji; although they followed each other. The reading was also picked up on Google. There are a few examples in your [A] reference, but no readings. Anyway, I hope that is useful. |

Comments: | Maybe that is the way to deal with it, but I was uncertain about the context of doubt [“what”] being associated with “なのだ” [in “なのだ; なんだ; なのです; なんです (aux) it is assuredly that ...; can say with confidence that”] and I also wondered if “なんだ” should even be included there. That was why I was wondering about the missing “い” which would give the “んだ” [explaining] “知らない [I don't know]. If the “(aux)なんだ” could also be short for “…なかった”, then it makes a lot of endings very uncertain as to meaning. One further point in the context of the text which I was reading is that the speaker of the dialogue constantly also leaves out the “い” in “いる” when it follows “-て”. However, I shall read-on looking more closely at text and context in order to see if I can confirm the Wiki comment in the author's usage of “知らなんだ”. The other entry of “なんだ; なあんだ 《何だ》 (int) (uk) What!” does, of course, make total sense. Many thanks for the feedback on my submission. It is always appreciated as I slowly travel the road of trying to understand. |

2. | A* 2012-02-13 10:11:52 Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
Comments: | That なんだ is a common (Kansai?) variant of …なかった. See the Wiki page http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/新方言 where it explains it thus: 西日本に多い否定の助動詞「ん」の過去表現は本来「…なんだ」であるが「ん」と共通語「…なかった」が交じり合って「…んかった」という形が生まれ、「…なんだ」に取って代わりつつある。 (例)知らなんだ→知らんかった I don't think this should be an entry. Perhaps the current entry for なんだ could have a second sense? |

Comments: | Sorry for the repeat if you came across the other submission first, but if you came aross this one first then you will by this comment know that there is another similar submission. I came across the above and in view of your comments, noted below, I thought that I should let you know about this entry. Re: 出入国管理 【しゅつにゅうこくかんり】 (n) immigration control, you stated, "Why don't they just use "入国管理"? Not for me to say, but they don't. All the dictionaries, including the government's own "Standard Legal Terms Dictionary" say it's "immigration control", so who are we to argue? Coming the other direction, the リーダーズ+プラス EJ glosses "immigration control" as "(出)入国管理", among other things like 入国審査." If this entry should remain in the dictionary, then maybe a cross-reference between this and "出入国管理及び難民認定法 【しゅつにゅうこくかんりおよびなんみんにんていほう】 (n) Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act" could be included in order to avoid a misunderstanding. |
