Comments: | This submission is not about editing the above, rather it is about the meaning of "かれ" which follows "遅" and "早". I wondered where "かれ" was derived from in order to give the resultant meaning. I searched around without success. I asked some Japanese people. Most told me not to bother about such things and just accept the translation. Some told me that it derived from "かれど(も)" or "かれば", but that did not seem to be wholly supported by some more research. Some told me that it was an old version of "にせよ". That makes some sense. One told me that according to their electronic dictionary, "かれ" was an old term which equalled "だから". That too would make sense. However, I cannot find that link. If that last explanation were correct, then an entry for "かれ" with a simple link to "だから" may be helpful to a searcher. Maybe, also a link to "にせよ" would also help. However, if your existing knowledge or search produces uncertainty, you may consider that it is not worth an entry. That is why I did not make a simple submission based upon my current information. At least, if you decide not to include it, I shall know that the majority of people to whom I spoke were basically correct. |

Comments: | If you were wondering whether this headword should be promoted, I would note that you have the following already in the main dictionary:- 学期末 【がっきまつ】 (n) end of term; end of semester Perhaps it may be helpful, in confirmation of the readings for the researhers, to include the other similar expressions as well. I believe that the inclusion of all of them would help with confirmation of readings for the researchers who are not reasonably well versed in the language. |

Comments: | * GG5: “final sale”? There is a GG5 entry, which is hard to understand; it suggests something like “final sale” (non-returnable, no service or support), but I can’t be sure, and it seems a secondary use (due to polysemy of 〜切る). FWIW, here’s a link that seems to use it in this sense: http://executive.itmedia.co.jp/c_bpm/archive/61/0 * “sold out” is mistake This is sometimes (mistakenly) used to mean “sold out”, which is correctly 売り切れ – this is pretty uncommon though, and the opposite mistake is even rarer. Compare “Sold out, sorry” 4,000,000+ 売り切れ御免 50,000+ 売り切り御免 and “Clearance sale” 1,000+ 売り切れセール 700,000+ 売り切りセール |

Comments: | A dictionary can only go so far, esp. with an irregular verb like 来る. Perhaps a 来い entry could be devised. |

Comments: | Many thanks for that. The problem which I had was this: When I searched for each bit of the total expression I could only find what seemed like one suitable entry for "こい", namely: "こい; っこい", but that did not quite fit for the reasons previously stated. Now I know that the "こい" relates to "来い", I can search for that and I get the following link:- 来い (etc.) See: 来る However, I cannot then go to (V) and find the "こい". I can of course now find that on another site. I think that(when I searched for "こい" as part of the "a + b" approach to the parts of the total expression) if "来い" had come up as well as "濃い" and "故意" and "鯉" and "恋" and "こい; っこい" and "古意" and "請い", I may have been able to reach the answer on a simple process of elimination, but as it was I was left with uncertainty until you provided the answer. |

Comments: | I have not changed the above because I may be up the wrong road, but with so many Google hits for the actual expression (聞かせてこい) which I was looking for it seemed to me that I should find an entry on the site for the complete expression as well as some help from the above entry. I am taking it that "こい" above is based upon "恋". As stated, the expression in the text which I was reading was "聞かせてこい". This I was taking, in context, as "he would love to cause the (the sound of birds)to be heard (by making a disturbance)" As the above entry seems to be only applicable as a suffix to an adjective or after a noun, it seems that it would not be applicable to my search. My point is this: that if the above entry is also applicable to a verb, my search would be a + b and possibly you may not wish to have a submission for the "聞かせてこい". |
