Comments: | "home comedy" gets no hits on google and seems very much a wasei eigo to me. I came across this as I was (and still am) struggling to find a good way to translate this Japanese. I do not believe we say "home comedy" in English, particularly for films, which is where this has popped up in my work. "Sitcom" also doesn't seem suitable for films, but may be fine for TV, in which case, I suggest adding "TV" in brackets after "sitcom" in the English. |

Comments: | I think "interrupt" and "cut into (a conversation)" are better as translations for 口を挟む or 言葉を挟む. I've added some more glosses. I've made a separate sense for "catch (a finger, etc.)" (as in meikyo). It looks a bit out of place in sense 1. Added a "to harbour" sense (in GG5 and daijs). The sentences need updating (only 3 are indexed). |

Comments: | I notice there was no response to my earlier comment about this entry. I've now run across that usage in three different books, so I'll hope you'll reconsider including it. It's the meaning as in "例のあの人" (the translation of "you-know-who" in the Harry Potter Japanese versions), which is a meaning like "that X" (例のあの人 would be "that guy"), where X isn't necessarily "aforementioned" or "said". I also saw it as "例の包み" ("that package (which he had earlier retrieved)") and "例の子供達" ("those kids (who have been in the newspapers lately") and "例のコンピューター" ("that computer (that the vice-principal keeps using")). I might put the meaning as "that (person or thing)" or "those (persons or things)", although that doesn't fully capture it, but it might be too wordy to say "that (person or thing that is well-known or has previously been a topic of discussion)" (noting again that "aforementioned" doesn't really capture it, because the prior mention may have taken place "offscreen"). When I've seen it, there's also a nuance of the thing in question perhaps being somewhat notorious or mysterious. |

Comments: | LOHAS is an abbr, but does that make ロハス one? It's not an abbreviation for some longer Japanese term. WP Ja mentions ロハース as alternative spelling, but it gets almost no Googits outside of Wikipedia stuff. Ignoring it for now. Sounds like awful marketing jargon if the Wikipedia article is anything to go by, but liking a word is not a prerequisite for adding it to the dictionary. Over 2 mil Googits too. JB: Reformatted it a little to be more in our "style". LOHAS is an acronym; not an abbreviation. ロハス is not an abbreviation. I'll add ロハース FWIW. |

Comments: | Seems common usage of 挟む/はさむ. Eijiro has: 道路を挟んだ向かいに住んでいる : live across the street from my house 壁を挟んだ : cross-border I've suggested adding the "to be across" sense to 挟む, and perhaps that's enough. |
|
1. | A* 2012-12-14 23:58:16 winnie <...address hidden...> | |
Comments: | I'm not confident about the part of speech for this one. It's used as an adjective: "廊下を挟んだ隣の部屋には...", "男女別の浴場の廊下をはさんだ反対側" and it seems to be more common in that past-tense adjectival form than the regular verb form -- 廊下を挟む -- although that exists also. So I may be completely wrong, and it should be entered as 廊下を挟む instead, although I'm not sure what the proper meaning would be for that... "to be across a hall", "to be separated by a hallway"...? |

Comments: | Since the introduction of the simplified readings policy, we've only used katakana readings for kanji when the word is gairaigo. So 骨を掴む【コツをつかむ】 doesn't work in that sense. コツをつかむ appears to be the most common form of this expression by a wide margin. We recently decided that it's okay to lead with [nokanji] forms, so I'll move it up. https://github.com/JMdictProject/JMdictIssues/issues/113 |

Comments: | The WWJDIC currently has just 自動操縦装置 with the 装置 indicating it's an autopilot device, but the version without 装置 can be used as "autopilot" in a more general context. You can also use 自動操縦をする for the figurative sense of a person "being on autopilot", and I got 290k google hits for 自動操縦する, so I've added "vs" to the part of speech. |
