Refs: | Pout, Hmph Face - Meaning, Examples in Anime, How to Say in Japanese https://www.japanesewithanime.com/2020/05/pouting.html If you've never looked up the verb "to pout" in a dictionary, you're probably as surprised as I was to find out that the dictionary doesn't include the way the word is most used in the anime fandom. ほっぺを膨らませる In anime, most of the time the word "pout" is used toward a character, it doesn't mean the character is "pushing their lips forward," but, instead, "puffing their cheeks." The term fukurettsura ふくれっ面 specifically refers to this so-called "pouting" face with cheeks puffed out. Meaning is explicitly about the facial expression with the cheeks: daijs: 頰をふくらませた不機嫌な顔つき。 sankoku: 不平、不満で、ほおがふくれたように見える顔。ふくれつら https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/pout to push the lower lip forward to show you are annoyed, or to push both lips forward in a sexually attractive way: https://eow.alc.co.jp/search?q=ふくれっ面 ふくれっ面 pout pouty [pouting] face sulky face Not a lot of examples, but basically "pout" or "pouting(face)". The one "sullen" gloss looks like an awkward J->E translation. https://context.reverso.net/translation/japanese-english/ふくれっ面 |
|
Comments: | Above all, see image search: "ふくれっ面" Even "pout" is not quite correct, (and the first ref comments on this), because this indicates a very particular facial expression. One reverso instance even says "pout-like". We don't appear to have a word for this in English, so "pout" is often used in its place. Image search is consistent with the cheek-puffing definitions. For me, "sullen" is a somewhat more severe state than ふくれっ面 seems to imply. I think the simplest thing to do is drop the additional glosses (sullen, sulky,...), which say nothing about the *manner* in which the expression is performed. If needed, we can add an [expl] or comment that says "as a signed of annoyance/anger/etc.". See しかめっ面 (frown; scowl; grimace). I don't think "look"/"face"/"expression" are necessary. の usage seems just to be "(someone) in the state of having a pouting face". ふくれっ面の 1486 ふくれっ面のまま 111 ふくれっ面の女の子 101 The xref might be a bad idea. 口を尖らせる is "to pout" in keeping with the English definition. But it's explicitly not synonymous. more of a "strongly related" term. Was really tempted to include "hmph face"(given by the ref.). Certainly the English-language images match, but I don't know how well understood this would be. |

Comments: | Split off separate sense for “lump in tissue” as opposed to muscle stiffness – distinguished in こり/しこり, and reasonably different senses. Heard as しこり in school, referring to a lump in a breast (as in cancer), same example as in GG5. Also added [uk] (except for [1]) – GG5 egs are in kana, and teacher had never seen しこり in kanji. |

Meaning 3 sort of captures it ("a fine phrase") but doesn't quite nail it. I added "the emotion or feeling inspired by something heard or read" to meaning #3. Please amend as you see fit. |

In this case, it'd be: daijs, daijr (or, as a short way to referring to the pair of them, daij). Please separate kanji forms with a semicolon rather than a comma. Don't include examples as part of the meanings; those can go in references or comments. Don't start something with a capital letter unless there's a reason to (generally proper nouns). An expression which ends with a verb like this will have the parts-of-speech [exp] and the type of the verb; in this case, [exp,v5s]. Separate senses like this: [1][exp,v5s] sense one [2][exp,v5s] sense two |

Comments: | Tried and checking with a native speaker but she hadn't heard of the word. It's probably ざけ rather than じゃけ - out of 8 words on daijs ending in 鮭, 7 are read ざけ and one is read さけ (but it comes with an "also -ざけ" note). On the other hand, daijr lists 塩鮭 as being read both -ざけ and -じゃ け. Not sure where I stand inclusion-wise, it's not a very common word and we don't have a definite source for the reading. |

Comments: | When "adj-f" first emerged and got described as "noun or verb acting prenominally" I think I had in mind that the verb would either not be conjugating or was conjugated already, as in 得も言われぬ or ああいった. Then along comes 信用できる/信用できない and mucks things up. I'm very tempted to say that if a verb is usually prenominal, don't have a v1/v5x tag. I think that should work, and 信用できない can fend for itself. Of course 食べる doesn't get an "adj-f". So, I guess I'm back to Marcus' earlier position, and drop the verb tag for these cases. |
|
11. | A* 2018-06-25 20:01:42 Rene Malenfant <...address hidden...> | |
Comments: | seems like the adj-f is unneeded. e.g., 食べるもの means 'things to eat', but we don't mark 食べる or any other verb as adj-f. i suggest adj-f not be used anywhere that it's tagged as a verb |

Comments: | I looked up this phrase and couldn't find it here, but I did see it in the example sentence for 犠牲 (どんな犠牲を払っても、それをやりとげるつもりだ). It's used the same way in the book I'm reading. I also found it at totoeba.org (http://tatoeba.org/eng/sentences/show/141272). |

Comments: | Note to align with xref when settled. As a final comment, I think "sulky look/face" is close if you think it's absolutely necessary, but I really think "sullen" is off the mark(too severe). sankoku places this entry *under* a top-entry for the xref. writes this in hiragana as as ふくれつら(under ふくれっつら). I agree the づ would usually go there, but this seems like an exception. yourei seems to confirm that even if old kokugos list it, づら is at least obsolete. (if we leave it unmarked, learners will convince themselves it's "fine" either way, which is a problem because づ is what you would guess). |
